Producing Good Females

I was just wondering the other day if there is a cross or a dog, or maybe even a bloodline when crossed on another bloodline out there that produces better than average female dogs?

I don't know as I have never really thought about it before, but I would imagine that there are dogs out there (male and female) that throw on the average, better female hounds. Maybe not, but a good discussion topic for a snowy winter day.

Female

Just getting females born seems to be my problem. I have had litters of all males. I have have had litters where the majority are males. Finally this last litter is 4 females and 2 males living. I do think that something to consider is a lot of people just want a well bred female to breed their junk to and never have plans of hunting the dog. Why is it that the owner of the litter, (me) can take mostly the leftovers of the litter and make coondogs from them. I have had people give up on a pup and give it away as a young dog and somewhere down the line someone calls and says they have this pup from my kennel and it is making a good dog. But back to the topic. It does seem like females are in short supply. I have been working on the female side for ten years. I have a video of three generations of females treed on one tree. Will try to post it…

Snowy winter day? 'Pr' L's Timber Sweetie produced Gr Nt Ch Long Tall Sally, who produced Gr Nt Ch Willow, who produced Nt Ch Wendy, who produced Nt Ch Wilma. Sweetie also produced Gr Nt Ch Tara. Sally also produced another Nt Ch Brewin's Lil Bit and "almost Nt Ch" Blossom. (Blossom had five 2nd's, three 3rd's and two 4th's but no First.) Sally also produced Gr Nt Ch Chicken Foot who produced a very nice young female that Randy Ficken owns. She has a First place finish already. Jason Guilliams has a couple of nice female pups out of Chicken Foot also that are just starting to tree. Wendall Bond has another nice female pup from Willow that he calls Storm. There are a couple more very nice females out of Wendy that are still too young for a comp hunt. And Wilma hasn't been bred yet.
The common thread in my females seems to start with Sweetie and then go to T-Top lines. (And yes Doc, Sweetie can be traced back to TJ.) But of course, you know as well as I do what the T-Top Females can do. It is a real shame that Sid didn't get more pups on the ground. I tried real hard but just could not make it happen.

Mark, I too have had problems getting females. Sweetie. Sally, Willow and Wendy all just have one or two females per litter. Wendy only raised 2 from her last litter out of 11 pups.

Studs are why low numbers of females in litters

There are two sex chromosomes. Offspring receives one from each parent. The one that they get from the mother will always be X because chromosome pair that makes a female a female is XX. Males have an XY pair. A sperm can either be X or Y. Depending on whether the egg gets fertilized with an X or Y chromosome detemermines gender.

XX female
Xy male

In short, yes the male is the one who determines the sex of the offspring.

It could really take some crossing to find it out I would think. If that could be done. Look out.

Richard how many different studs was Sweetie bred to.
I like this thread. Wasn't there several good Females off Reba?

Oh my goodness, Bomber is in all of my females after Sweetie and Sally.
And they have each been bred to several different males and have produced very few female pups. So in theory it sounds like it is up to the male but in practice it seems like it is the females. Why do some women have all girls while some women have all boys and some have an equal number of boys/girls? Maybe it is like that repeat cross thing. In theory they should all be the same but in practice they aren't.

I THINK THE GUY WAS WANTING TO KNOW WHAT WAS PRODUCING BETTER THAN AVERAGE FEMALES NOT THE AMOUNT OF FEMALES,SEX IS DETERMINED BY MALE AND IF MALE DOGS ARE LIKE BULLS WHEN THEY GET OLDER SHOULD PRODUCE MORE FEMALES,BOAR HOGS PRODUCE MORE BOAR PIGS WHEN THEY ARE YOUNGER,BULLS PRODUCE MORE BULL CALVES WHEN THEY ARE YOUNGER SO SHOULD MALE DOGS.

3 generations off females

In the video is over ten years of work. Three generations of dogs that I personally have trained. I purchased Mandolin as a pup and bred the other two. In the front is Nt Ch Mandolin, 11 and 1/2 years old( 3 wins toward Gr Nt). She is off of Nt Ch.Doc and Gr Nt Fiddle. In the back is Nt Ch Mandy II, 5 years old, 3 wins to Gr Nt. She is off of Gr Nt Banjo III and Nt Ch Mandolin. In the middle is Coon Bustin Mandy, 2 years old. She is off of Gr Nt The Coon Buster and Nt Ch Mandy II. When it is all said and done I think a lot of what makes the dog is the breeding that is in the dog and a trainer that will give a pup the opportunity to develope those traits

Smiths red rowdy his daughters reproduced few years back I checked the the reproduces list males and females and out of the forty dogs on the female and male hisoryical and current list all but four went back to a rowdy daughter in there ped
Outlaw Jesse sons x rowdy was money for good females both in the woods or breeding pen
go man Sam males x rowdy was money also
That's what I came up with when I did my research

Tony Bree's daddy reproduce good females out of his 11 titled pups I think all but one is a female and they seem to be fallowing the family tradition also

Let's see Gr Nt Kate produced Gr Nt Pepper Ann, who produced Nt Ch Ragged Ridge Reba who produced Gr Nt Boone when bred to Gr Nt Haze. And Haze was out of the Rabble X Bomber's Red Wire cross. Rabble was out of Raven. Raven and Bomber's Red Wire were sisters out of the famous Bomber X Bell cross. I wonder who Bell goes back to? Now what will happen if I breed Boone to Nt Ch Wendy? I wonder if I will get a good female to carry on with?

Good Females

I know my female produced 8 females when mated to Turkey.

The same female produced 8 males when mated to Tank.

I guess that the male does control how many females are born in a litter, but I'm talking about something else.

I'm wanting to get at what Mark is talking about. What bloodline x bloodline = a high percentage of good females?

I was thinking about the females that I know of that went back to Burkdoll's Bone. Almost all of them were above average to good females and most of them were decent reproducers too. Seemed like you could cross them on about anything and get some decent hounds.

What has the Steve-O and Chilli cross thrown for females? I have seen Flow and she could be the foundation for any mans kennel. Were there others?

How many good females came out of Rat x Raven? I had two pretty good ones from that. I can think of a couple of others.

How many good females out of Twister x Music. I know that cross had some great males come out of it, but how about the ladies?

Questions

Chris,
A little about Flow.
Twister & Music produced Bailey. Bailey produced Chili. Chili produced Flow.

What about timing of the breeding? Breeding early vs late in the heat cycle. I know that's not really what you meant, but curious if anyone pays attention to this.
To get more male pups: Time the breeding as close to ovulation as possible: The Y-chromosome sperm are faster than the X-chromosome sperm, there will be more Y-chromosome sperm who reach the egg first, making it more likely that a Y-chromosome carrying sperm will fertilize the egg.
For more Female pups: Breed early in the cycle long before ovulation. X-chromosome carrying sperm travel slower but live longer. More X-chromosome carrying sperm living to fertilize the egg.

Girls list

Chris ,I put the old girls list up for you. I think it tells a little about what your looking for. It's an old list and things have changed some but it still tells us what bloodlines seem to have worked.

I have learned almost all of what little I know from Mr Marshall. It seems to me that several others have been listening to him also. I think that he is the expert and has for sure done a lot of research on this topic. If I were y'all, I would listen closely to what he has to say.

Mr Hyde, isn't it about time for a new list?

Funny that you should ask. I had a very nice female out of Steve-O X Chilli named Pearl. I got her to breed to Moose (Rabble X Sally). While another guy was keeping/hunting her, she came in heat and he let her get bred to a yard dog. I got her back and ended up selling her (for a lot of $$$) before she came in heat again. Then she got sick and died before her new owner could breed her to Moose. Another one of my failures.
