Track speed, how do you know when it's real track speed. Environment effects what I'm going to say next. Can you count on one hand the number of mature coon the hound has caught on the ground the past year? If so you may have a nice hound but it's not a super track dog. An average track dog that's by itself with a coon will win often. If a dog runs away from other hounds with a track most every time it's the real deal. You'll know what to look for if you have seen it and realized what was going on.
I don't know how many coons my dogs could catch on the ground, but I lost count a long time ago the number of bear they catch on the ground, to tree, to bail out and tree again. The video below is a bear that bailed out 7 times before staying treed, total miles ran, bit over 8, total dogs on bear 3, they are in the above photo with ped. I guess I am a bit ugly or really scary looking because when I got there he was out of there, he finally stayed treed, he was whipped, the dogs were whipped, and I was whipped.
One must have a gritty dog with endurance, speed, track, and grit to stay with one. If I had more money or time, I guess I would get back into coon hunting, just had bad experiences in the comp hunts and lost interest in it, I always enjoyed the meeting folks and seeing the different dogs. Maybe I need more stimulation these days or perhaps I am getting scared of the dark.
I can work 6 dogs on bear and know what I got on the end of the lead. Yes they are all independent dogs, but not to a fault, only one is perfect.
You are right about the variables but a good dog should move a track at at least 5-8 mph trailing I would think. I know I have had several dogs that could track bear that I know they couldn't smell, just by seeing tracks in the snow....that's no b.s. either, and smell one well over 500 yds with the right conditions, but there is the scent factor, 100-400lb bear will defiantly leave more scent than a 5-20lb coon. Today four dogs were hunted 3 bear treed.
I am just looking for some good males to pic from, thanks for the positive responses. All 3 dogs are very nice, with exceptional breeding. Hope you guys enjoy the video.
