I have never seen a blood blister with a snake bite. Snake bite will swell is whole leg up. Like rthompson said see if he has something in it.

If I thought that I had been bitten by a snake, I would immediately go to the nearest emergency room. Is your leg all red and inflamed?

May want to try Epsom salts and warm water to soak the foot in to reduce swelling. Which may also draw out some of the infection if there is any. Good luck!

I just saw a human hospital bill on FB from a guy that got bit by a rattlesnake. It was over $150,000.

Go easy on us vets! 😝👍

Emergency Office Visit $100
Anti Venom $300/ bottle
IV Cath and Fluids $50
Blood work $150

The cost of that Anti venom isn't getting any cheaper. If you live in the south it's definitely worth it to get your dog vaccinated with Red Rocks Rattlesnake vaccine. Seems to be effective for those southern varieties of snakes.

Current recommendations are to get Benedryl in the dog right away at 1mg per pound of body weight. Always carry Benedryl with you when hunting. Anti inflammatories should be given for the swelling and pain and broad spectrum antibiotics given ASAP . Avoid corticosteroids like dexamethasone and don't soak in cold water. Drawing agents like Epsom Salts and Black Salve may help in drawing venom from the site. Don't cut the area and try to suck the venom out like in the movies. That's Hollywood medicine. Don't apply a tourniquet and keep the affected limb below the heart level if possible. Seek medical attention right away.

The use of dexamethasone to treat snake bites has changed in the last few years. It is now recommended to avoid dexamethasone and to use NSAIDS like Previcox, Rimadyl, Deramaxx. A single dose of Ibuprofen at 2 - 4 mg per pound can be given if you don't have a veterinary specific NSAID on hand. Don't exceed 200mg (single over the counter tablet) in 24 hours for a 50 pound dog. Ibuprofen is highly toxic to dogs at doses above 4mg per pound or repeated dosing. I don't recommend it's use outside of an emergency situation where no other veterinary NSAID is available. Do Not Use Aspirin! The venom effects platelets already so the last thing you want to do is compound the issue by giving Aspirin.

These guidelines are the same for human snake bites now. It is actually medical negligence to use Dexamethasone in human medicine.

I agree the RED ROCKS is a very good deal. It probably saved one of mine. Only problem, and red rocks will tell you that it may be very in-effective for an eastern diamondback bite. Every dog I have owned that got eastern bitten is in a hole. I do know of a few that survived, but very very few.

I would start out by soaking it in hot Epsom salt water then massage leg down then squeeze the heck out of it more immediate area get whatever you can out . Apply Prid drawing salve , small tin found @ walmart or pharmacy usually under $4 . The rimadyl our on board vet mentioned would be great to help with the inflammation and soreness if you can get your hands on some . For the money you have already spent sounds like the vet should just give you some lol . If it were mine and your vet hasn't already I would put the dog on antibiotics , penicillin shot a few days in row to combat secondary infection . It could have been a copperhead bite for them I do the above along with liquid Benadryl and they are usually better in 24 hours , some do require lancing to drain off the fluid . My money is on dog got stuck by a locust thorn or other foreign body even a tiny piece can cause what you have described .
Good luck with everything ,
Jen

Ours get bit several times each summer, never been much of a big deal. Benadryl for a day or so and they're good to go...

Yours sounds much more like a foreign object/splinter that's trying to come out the top.

You're bringing your dog to someone who went to college for 8 years, and you're asking a bunch of people that don't know the difference in "sell" and "sale" what to do for your dog?

A vet did post a comment on here . And as for the rest of us , many do know the difference between "sale" and "sell" and have enough knowledge that we don't have to run to the vet for everything . I have seen post after post from people who have wasted money on city slicker vets who don't know the difference between a poodle and a hound much less understand how to treat some of the problems hounds and performance dogs incur . Prime example I took a dog to a vet one time who tried to give my dog cough medicine when he had got hoarse . I had to tell him what medications I needed . I now use a vet that owns bird dogs and the other one in the office has a brother that coonhunts . 8 yrs of school does not equal hounds man or knowledge of them .
