Drontal

Not drontal plus! Just drontal and it will extract the tapes! It's fairly cheap. Best way to keep them from getting tape worms is to control the fleas on hounds, boxes and perimeter of the kennel. For that, one needs permethrin 10 from TSC Just follow the directions!!

Actually inside the US, Drontal Plus is what you want for tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. It has Febantel/Pyrantel Pamoate/ Praziquantel. If you want just a wormer for tapeworms then you want Droncit which is only Praziquantel. The Praziquantel is what takes care of tapeworms.

The old Drontal, labeled in the US, just had Febantel/Pyrantel Pamoate and not Praziquantel. The only Drontal I see on the market anymore is from outside the US. This Drontal from outside the US is labeled for tapeworms and has praziquantel in it. Not sure why the company made it so confusing. The only Drontal I see labeled in the US is for cats and it has praziquantel as well. Go figure! Be careful with labeling since Bayer Animal Health is located outside the US in South Africa and the parent company Bayer has headquarters in Germany.

So in the US:
Droncit (praziquantel) - tapeworms
Drontal Plus (Febantel/Pyrantel Pamoate/ Praziquantel) - roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and giardia

Outside the US:
Drontal (Febantel/Pyrantel Ebonate/Praziquantel)- roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and Giardia

This applies for dogs only!

It depends on the size of the tablet and weight of the dog. The dose table is on the side of the bottle.

Just get some Safeguard liquid and use 1cc per 5 pounds of dog. You can also get Strongid-T Liquid and use 1cc per 10 pounds of dog. These can be rotated or used at the same time. I usually like to rotate them monthly and give them along with Ivomec 1% .1cc per 10 pounds.

not for Dipylidium caninum

Fenbendazole is not said to work for the common dog tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum, so the above post by ahallada may not work. I'm actually not sure that it won't work, or that it's simply not "registered" to work against that species. This is hard to figure out without resorting to research papers. Maybe ahallada knows more about this? I am pretty sure my dog has Taenia species tapeworms as we really don't have any fleas here (it's too arid and cold in the Winter), and the last time I had this happen (with another dog) that's what kind of tapeworms they were. The dogs likely pick them up if they eat mice or other parts of infected animals, and with a field dog, it's hard to stop this behavior. They can also get it from being really friendly with another infected dog.

Anyway I used Equimax from a previouse post http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthrea...647#post5891647

I added my own formula for dogs for use with the tube that Equimax comes packaged in. This way I did not have to transfer it to another syringe. Worked fine.

I was perplexed to find that I could not get Prazequantel here OTC on it's own. Lots of places were out of dog/cat meds, or they only had pills for small dogs. They were not cheap either. So the Equimax was the only thing I could find reasonably priced.

As far as Ivermectin for heartwom goes, I use liquid and put it on a treat monthly during mosquito season and for a month after (obviously I will skip it this month). We don't really have heartworm here either, but I do travel to places that do occasionally.

This seems to work pretty good,,

VERY EASY REFINED DIRECTIONS !!!!!!!

Total Wormer Plus Heart Worm Protection ..

Total cost to Purchase everything to Treat 6,714 Pounds of Dog Weight = $ 91.54
That’s equal to $0.014 per pound of dog weight .. A 60 pound dog would have a total cost of $0.84 to worm monthly
You could monthly treat (9) 60 pound dogs for a year ..

1- 16 oz. Bottle of Pyrantel Pamoate Suspension = $ 26.75
1- 25 gram Bottle of Praziquantel Powder = $ 32.85
1- 50 Ml Bottle of 1% Injectable Ivermectin = $ 32.85

Directions for the Mixture :

In a Fresh Clean/Sterile Bottle that can Hold around 24 oz. of liquid add the Entire 16 oz. bottle of Pyrantel Pamoate Suspension.
Next open the Praziquantel and Remove 1 level Teaspoon of the Powder from the canister, the Remaining quantity is 23,500 mg. Add
all the powder to the 24 oz bottle of Pyrantel Pamoate Suspension.
Next Draw off around 2.36 cc/ml of Ivermectin and add that to the Bottle of Mixture .. Shake the Bottle for 3-4 min. Plus shake continence before each dog dosage.

Finished Product:

Each Ml of this Mixture contains :
1- 50 mg of Pyrantel Pamoate
2- 50 mg of Praziquantel
3- 0.050 mg of Ivermectin

Dosage:

Each ml/cc will treat 14 pounds of dog weight . So a 60 pound would receive 4.25 ml/cc of the Mixture ..

Formula for Dosage is ( Total Dog weight / "Divided" by 14 )

Ya I forgot this thread was just about tapeworms above. Sorry about that. Safeguard (Fenbendazole) will treat Taenia tapeworms that is spread by ingestion of rodents. You need Praziquantel for getting rid of the Dipylidium tapeworm from ingestion of fleas. This is a cool trick here. Where are you finding the Praziquantel powder?

If you keep your dog flea free, you can avoid the most common tapeworms (dipylidium) . Avoiding the ingestion of rodents and routine deworming with Safegaurd will prevent taenia tapeworms.

The above wormer was originally posted by Steve Morrow, Majestic Tree H, is his user name on here. He has several different post on wormers, has a lot of info about all the different ones, and their uses.

I got all the stuff off ebay for about $90..... If you have several dogs, it saves money to mix it up.
