Question on which new

Tracking and training system. I was going to update my garmin and collars, But my tri tronics has quit. Now would I be better with the Alpha ? Or just upgrade my garmin and by another shock system. What is the
Pros and cons.

.

It has taken a few years to get here, but the ALPHA with TT 15 collars is a nice outfit.

Get one collar that's for shocking, and a different collar for tracking. My buddy didn't and he regrets it so bad. On a competition hunt you are STUCK

Range

According to the box it says 9 miles, but the farthest ive used mine was almost a mile and it worked. I never had to use it any further than that yet.

Around my territory,I get an average of 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 mile,,but if I hook alpha up to vehicle antenna,I can get the 9 mile it is rated at,,in certain areas,,much farther

How many coons you got up there? Around here i tree them between 200 yards and 700 MAX depending how hard im hunting a certain farm. Dont have many coonhunters here, so coons are well populated.

i run 220 and dc30s since they came out, with classic 70 setup on every dog for along time. was hell bent wouldnt mess with touch screen alpha.

messed with buddies alpha night after night and hated it!!! finally broke down and got touch screen smart phone and after that got alpha and i wouldnt trade it for the world.

figured out the alpha right away and gets so much better reception and range than astro setup its not funny. always kept astro stuff updated and had everything refurbished couple times and it doesnt compare.

myself and many friends that were totally against alpha are believers.

Fred here is what I would think about doing. Get you an ALPHA and that gives you complete control over your hound. Keep your older astro system and when you go to a night hunt put the older collar and the ALPHA on your dog. During the hunt used the older system for keeping up with your hound. Now your hound gets out of pocket and time out is called you just turn on the ALPHA and then tone him in.
That is the setup we run as the T5 is great but I feel the tone feature on a hound for recall is too important not to have.

Blue2011,,,we have plenty of coon,,I've never needed to hook up vehicle antenna to find a dog,,just get bored every now and then, and I like testing unit in different weather conditions to see how far it will get out,,

The Alpha is to tracking and training coonhounds what night vision is to predator calling...a must have. I don't think it will shock/tone a dog 9 miles away, but it will certainly track that far, at least on flat or rolling ground. In the mountains I am sure it is going to be less. It will shock over a mile. I don't believe anyone has any business shocking a dog that far.
Shock and tone are not done thru the GPS satellites like many people think, it is a line of sight direct transmission, like a radio. The Alpha has a lot of useless cluttered junk on it that 99% of the owners never have or ever will use...it's there because they can, that aside, buy with confidence. Any money spent on something other than an Alpha set up will later be concluded a waste.
