I would say that if you were hunting last night in Virginia you probably aren't the only one who lost gps contact due to the very heavy cloud cover. May not be the reason, there could be something else going on...try it out today and see if it drops again. No clouds to have to get through now.

It's not only the distance to the dog that has to be "picked up"...I understand communication between the collar and the handheld should have easily reached the distance, especially 75 yards. There are two things that have to make contact, the collar and handheld is one. The GPS satellites is the other. You can be standing right next to the collar but if you cant lock the satellites it wont work.
GPS has to have a lock on at least three of them. It reads a time pulse and uses the difference in time to figure out exactly where you and the collar are. Too much cloud cover or precipitation and you lose the satellite comms.
I have had guys tell me they lose satellites during certain times of the year, in heavy woods from the leaves on the trees.

I know you have a 320 and this don't apply, but one other thing confusing is that I can loose GPS with my Alpha but still tone or shock a dog because that part of the device is just a radio signal from the handheld to a collar.

What do you have your gps set on?,I used to have mine set on normal, and lost signal a couple of times being less than 500 yards away, then I set it on WAAS/EGNOS and I haven't lost signal yet being within 2 1/2 or so miles,,,so it definitely improved my signal strength tremendously,,that is on my 320,,not sure how it is on my Alpha,,just bought it 3 days ago from conkey and haven't had it in the woods yet...good luck ...
