Last night we pleasure hunted. Got in the woods a little later than normal. Dogs hit a track, sounded real good, run it 3-400 yards and lock up treed on a big den tree. It runs up between two huge holly trees and we can see a hollow 3/4 of the way up. First thing I say when I get a good look is "it'll be a miracle if he's on the outside." My buddy says, "nope, he's up there I see him!!!" I walk around to where he is and shine and sure enough there sits the coon way up in the top hugging the trunk. I shoot twice and nothing happens...the third shot loosened the piece of bark or rotten wood or whatever "the coon" was and we realized it was no coon at all!!! Never saw an eye and couldn't see his tail just because of the way "he" was sitting up there.
In all my years of coon hunting this was the first time I saw something that looked so much like a coon I actually had to shoot at it. I've seen plenty of times when I thought something might be a coon. I've had plenty in competition where I wanted it to be a coon, but this time we were all so sure. If this would have been a nite hunt plus points would have been agreed on by all of us.

that happen to to me for the first time this fall.my mutt treed up a big beech tree,i saw what i thought was a coon near the top about 70 foot high so i shot couple of times and nothing hit the ground.i thought i know i aint that bad of a shot so i got to looking real good and seen were a limb had broken off and the stub sticking out had turn nearly black.i felt like a dummy wasting them 22 bullets.lol

I have had that happen actually several times through out the years. This fall the dog treed what looked like a huge coon. I saw an eye and shot. Half of the coon dropped, and half of the coon started climbing. Actually, there were two coon hunkered together up there.

I saw a stain plussed this past spring at a RQE. I told them that you could plainly see that it was not a coon from two sides of the tree. They would not move and voted to plus it.

Yep, even with the new LED's that have a little bit of yellow tint to them it is still harder to see the coon. I not only have trouble seeing coons, I have a young dog that just will not put on any weight. When I first got her I looked at her gums and they looked completely whitish gray. I took her to the vet the next day and got a funny look...she said, "gums look nice and pink to me, no problem here." Got her home and looked with the LED light and sure enough they looked bad, took a regular flashlight out there and saw the nice pink just like in daylight. I still wouldn't trade my LED.

I had the opposite happen at a Walker Days several years ago... all dogs treed together, on a leafless cherry tree that couldn't have been more than 12-18" in diameter, on a thin fence row. We could see all sides of the tree from the fields, on both sides.

There were four guys staring at that tree, all of us wanting to see a coon, and after 7-8 minutes we were ready to give up. As we were about to put it to a vote (and all minus it) the judge, said, "I sure can't believe all those dogs missed it like that" and as he looked up, the coon at the top of the tree looked at us! He was at the top in the twigs, where he should have stood out like a sore thumb, and we were all ready to minus them!

I too have wondered if "bright" lights, is the answer...

yep seen that happen before the fella even won his cast . Two seen what was suppose to be a coon . That's all it took odd man out lol what a win

Someone I knew, was filming a TV show once, with a NtCh cast and a non-hunting judge. They plus'd a coon in a den, but when the cast walked away and the camera man went to film the coon (with a high-power zoom lens) nothing was to be found!

Of course, there's no "instant replay" in coon hunting, and I'm not sure who you would penalize with burning a time out!
