This topic may have been brought up before, but I haven't found the thread.

Being that coon hides have little value this season, I find more value in them alive for my training purposes. In the past, I've caught coon in live traps and turned them loose in front of.young dogs. I have also caught coon in 1 1/2 size steel leghold traps for training purposes too. I would carry a five gallon bucket with me on the trapline, place the five gallon bucket over the trapped coon, release his leg from the trap and then carefully put the lid on the bucket for transport. This worked good because I could set a lot more traps than the standard live box traps and had lesser chance of theft with my steel traps.

The only downside was injury to the coon when using the steel traps. Now the trapping world has a "dog proof" trap. These traps have been around a few years, but I have never used them. I've watched some video of these traps in action and noticed a lot of the volume trappers releasing the smaller coons they catch out of these traps without injury to the coon. I'm thinking these traps would be perfect for catching live coon, but I haven't ran into anyone in the hound world using these traps to catch live coon for training. These traps are $12 each and I can haul two hundred of them in the back of my truck compared to about a dozen live traps in the same space.

So I am asking if anyone has used these traps to catch their coon alive for training purposes or for stocking their hunting spots with coon? Let the responses begin

over the years I have done as much or more trapping as I have coon hunting...and I like the dog proof traps.

I used them almost exclusively in damage control trapping for several years, mostly because the chance of catching "off game" in them is pretty much nil.

damage is almost none, though with 1 1/2 coil or longsprings there shouldn't be much or any either if they are checked regular and there isn't a lot of trash (brush ect) around to get tangled in. tip there, use drags (I use old smallish hedge posts or similar "log" drags myself) instead of staking down solid.

all in all though if coon and coon alone are the only target, the dog proof traps are pretty much impossible to beat.

We have used DP traps this year for training purposes. We used my brother in laws Long Pole to snare the coon and transport it.

We currently have a bunch of them set..... just waiting for the next opportunity.

It worked very well.

Coon don't seem to fight dp's like they do a regular foot hold trap.

Well they can't chew their feet and toes off with a DP trap. That's the bad thing they do with a foot hold.

I've used dog proofs for several years now and must say that they have quickly become my go to coon trap.

They work excellent for live trapping IF they're set right.

I'd suggest using rebar or disposable stakes for anchoring arms length from trees, roots, rocks, anything the coon can tangle in or grab for leverage. This will almost eliminate foot damage/ broken legs.

Many people cable of to trees/ fences which works but binds up the swivels an causes for damage, pull outs etc.

Freddy, you might want to check with the game warden to see if there are any restrictions on trapping coon for training purposes. I know trapping in season and out of season are different, local guy paid $500 fine this summer. Its just a suggestion, there might be a difference in live traps and leg holds, etc. Just a thought, might save you a fine. Good Hunting. Tom
