I don't really think anymore that a fight is necessary for the dog's sake. I think the shot and the coon hitting the ground then getting to wool it a little is all the reward needed.

We had one get coonhound paralysis last winter from fighting the coon. You can't always kill the coon in the tree but we dont intentionally aim to wound.

Every now and then, the coon is going to hit the ground ready to rock.. that's just the way it is. Keep 'em treed!

Shooting coons any more is a waist in my book you can't sell them and I can't eat them. So I tree em and leave em.
Not to knock any one elses opinion on the matter. truth be told I have a bitch that is 5 now she made nite ch at 18 months old and at that time had never even seen a coon.. Granted she is special, but if they are bred right they will tree with out any help from coons shot, petting, or coaxing.
She's still treeing coons and has only between 10 or 15 coons ever shot out to her. good luck

DEAD! Easier on the coon, easier on the dogs and easier on me when I clean them. My wife will get on my butt if I bring in a chewed up coon for her to cook.

If every day you went to work and a guy punched in the face, how long before you didn't really want to go to work??? It's just a thought that makes me shoot them stone dead.

I have hunted with quite a "few" coonhunters and how they come outa the tree got very little to with how they wanted them to.

I tree them and leave them. If I killed them I'd have to eat them or feed them to the dogs and that's too much trouble.
