Pup bit by raccoon Allegheny Co PA no rabies shot yet...should I be worried?

My 1yr old walker pup got bit Friday the 12th by a big boar coon. Shot him out and when it hit the ground it took off running. Ranger ran up and grabbed him and it was on. Got bit in the nose and face. He hasn't had rabies shots yet. Nothing led me to believe the coon had rabies, but we were in Allegheny County PA where there is a high number of rabies cases.

Should I be worried???

What should I do??
Trying to contact vets in my area now, haven't lived here long.

Anyone else ever worry like this and turn out to be nothing?

Thank you.

If you were unsuccessful at killing the coon you will need to keep him isolated and keep an eye on him and watch for symptoms...not sure what the incubation time is for rabies, but your vet will know. or Google it..if you could have killed the coon and had it tested, that would have been good...but i will also say you were being very irresponsible not having that pup vaccinated..sorry to say but that was not smart on your part... Lesson learned right ?

Lesson Learned the hard. I killed the coon, but didn't think anything at the time, skinned it and walked back to the truck. The pup had his shots when I got him, I assumed he had rabies vaccine, contacted the breeder and he had not. It's my fault and irresponsibility. But yes, lesson learned the hard way. The coon looked healthy, but you never know.

if you still have the head of coon send it in...otherwise keep pup isolated, you can google it, but its not a long time of isolation, the problem is if the dog shows signs and the health department gets ahold of the issue, they'll kill everything on the place etc...

I wouldnt worry.. the chances that coon had rabies is probably about the same as your chances of being struck by lightning.

Testing

The coon can only pass on the rabies virus in the final stages when the virus replicates and goes from the brain to the saliva glands. If the coon was not staggering and could climb and run chances are it didn't have final stages rabies. (but not always)If you are really worried go back get the carcass and cut the head off and contact your local health dept. they can advise you as to where to ship the brain on ice for testing. If you shot the coon in the head chances are the brain may not be suitable to do the testing. Since you were not bitten chances are the cost of testing and shipping may fall on you and is pretty expensive but you could check and see with your local health dept.. I would go booster the dog. In cases where our dept. has a situation where there is a bite to a dog from a wild animal we cant test we put the dog under 6 mos. surveillance and confine. If you were bitten by cat or dog we would put the animal under a 10 day confine/watch if we have the animal to observe.

I live in Ohio and was hunting Pennsylvania. I called the area's health department and they said the time elapsed to collect the head was too long to due temperature going above 40 for a couple days. I explained the scenario to them and they felt confident the raccoon didn't have rabies based on what I told them. I contacted the vet and just took both my hounds in for a booster, he seems to think everything will be fine. Coon was way up a tree, healthy and took off running when it hit the ground after wounding it. The reason I was so concerned is Allegheny county PA has one of the highest case rates in the United States for rabies. Thanks everyone for your advice and help. I feel a lot better.

Vaccines are not magic and not all dogs vaccinated develop immunity, especially pups. I would get him vaccinated but would be more worried about coon paralysis.

Hi Doug ,hope all is well with you. We also have 2 or 3 confirmed a year, when you consider the chances that those rare infected animals would contact a dog during the period when they can transmit the virus it seems pretty unlikely.

How many of these cases are with coon hounds that contacted infected raccoon while hunting? Or are these other cases where they are contacting infected animals during the day or not hunting?

A little known fact. The CDC classifies every case where the animal is not not present for testing as a confirmed rabies case.

I know why they do it, but I don't agree with several things the CDC does.

I don't know much on the subject but from what I understand most so thought rabied Fox and coon are typically mange or distemper.

what fisher stated is exactly right. 99.9% of what people believe was a rabid animal was in fact distemper. I tested 400+ specimens over a 8 years term and only 5 came back positive to be rabit. 2 bats 2 skunks and only 1 coon.

Mind you, that EVERY ONE of these specimens tested were believed to be rabid by the general public, thus the reason they were tested in the first place.

with that said. the chances of your dog coming in contact with one of these coon out of the millions of non infected ones is slim to none.

do I think every hound should have its rabbies vacs. sure, why not take preventative measures, but if I was in your shoes I would not be worried one bit.

take care
Jeff S.

stop

coming over here and killin my coon !!! LOL.... I think you will be fine, never had a problem here in Allegheny County.. been coonin 40 years .. Allegheny Co. health department flys over wooded areas and drops fish scented rabies vaccine cakes every year ..I have had em in my yard. They try to combat rabies very hard here. We have alot of unhuntable woods in this county and the coon population can explode.. That is where the problems are, not out where the woods can be hunted.. or trapped..

Vaccines have proved to be very efficient ask any vet that has done titer testing. There has never been a confirmed case of dog rabies in our county( largely due to the required rabies vaccination programs and license requirements) and any vaccinated animal that has come into contact with a tested positive wild animal that was vaccinated and quarantined has never gotten rabies. I asked for the county data. Vaccines work if stored and shipped properly.

CDC reports on confirmed cases that were sent for testing by vets and local health depts. They will show data of suspect cases or numbers tested but are very specific to title CONFIRMED cases.

A lot of suspected rabies is in fact distemper, animals that have sustained injury or neurological symptoms from other disease or illness.

Everybody on a message board has an opinion and the county and state departments are just trying to do their job to serve the public. If your daughter or son got bit by a wild raccoon and it escaped don't you think you would want your child protected?? Its a dangerous disease that has really been controlled by vaccinating pets and careful practices set in place by agency's. So before you listen to someone's opinion on a message board do your research, google or ask a vet or call your health dept. Our Health Dept is asked to test hundreds of animals a year but only test a handful after getting the facts and determining if there was contact or a bite and how the animal acted.

So other than "back in the forties" no one has ever heard of/known of a hound contracting Rabies? I am defintely not advocating not getting your dog vaccinated for rabies but for you "researchers" has the CDC ever confirmed a case of a coonhound contracting rabies?
