Everything evolves & changes over time. I guess chasing these potlickers around is no different.

Maybe it's just me, but there seems to be an extraordinary amount of dogs offered for sale between 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 years old that have never been hunted by themselves. Do folks just not see the need to single one out any more, or prefer pack hunting every drop? What do other folks think the reason(s) for this may be?

Even if you were going to sell a hound, wouldn't you at least turn the thing loose a couple times by itself to just see what it would do? I don't know about anyone else, but one of the first things I would want to know involving the prospective purchase of a hound would be; can it be hunted alone & tree a coon? In the majority of sale ads I see, this is rarely mentioned.

I know this subject has been hashed over few hundred times, may as well make it a few hundred & one! Just one of those things that intrigues & puzzles me at the same time. It seems 35 years ago it was the exception for a hound not to have been hunted alone some. Now days, it seems to be the rule.

I totally agree. I don't know if it's just me and my area, but I just don't see guys hunting by themselves with just 1 dog much anymore. I get more and more calls all the time of people wanting to go hunting with me, packing dogs that never get hunted alone and yea, it's fun to hunt with others from time to time, but I think my most enjoyable hunting is alone with a young dog that is just beginning to get it done alone. I don't think one can ever have a truly "finished" cooner until they have hunted a dog many nights alone and I see a lot of young prospects ready to be singled out that way that just never get the chance.

there is at least as many hunters out there that are afraid of the dark as there are pups afraid of the dark!
some hunters just enjoy hanging out with there buddies. others enjoy training pups, and some fellows enjoy comp hunting.

WITH THE HUSSLE AND BUSSLE OF THIS WORLD, ALOT OF THE GUYS THAT KEEP HOUNDS DON'T GET THEM HUNTED REGULAR, AND WHEN THEY GET A CHANCE TO GO, OUT OF GUILT, THEY TAKE THE WHOLE YARD, AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT THAT LEADS TO.AND IS WITH MOST HOUND PEOPLE, THEY HAVE TO MANY TO DO JUSTICE.NEXT THING YOU KNOW THEY GOT DOGS FOR SALE THAT BEEN TO THE WOODS 10 TIMES THAT ARE 3 YEARS OLD AND WILL TREE ON A CAGE COON AND GO WITH THE OTHER DOGS AT NIGHT. When I hunt I enjoy hunting the dogs alone. I think it promotes good independance. The down side of that is when you have buddies who pack hunt they don't understand the importance and can feel left out. One nite Dana took a hound by herself here on the farm and I took a different one pack hunting with the buddies. It's a balance for sure. I have probably leaned toward the alone single dog hunting more than I should?

MR. "V" is dead on. I have some buddies that are the same as Pam said and some that just have nowhere to hunt unless they go with someone else. They don't need me to remind them what they do or don't have on the end of there leash. Heck, mine can tree a possum rather they got any help or not!!

I believe that 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 is probably the average time it takes to get a puppy, raise it, start it, get it going some and then realize that this particular dog is not the world class, world champion, world beater that we all dream of owning, so...it gets sold to start all over again and try for that dream dog again as soon as possible. Which goes to what I always say about buying a dog...the type of dog everyone wants is generally not for sale or not affordable because when one of them comes along the person lucky enough to own it will not sell and if he does he wants too much for the average hunter to afford.

also with the fellow that has that pup that isn't the dream pup that they hoped it would be there is some wind bag blowing smoke to them about some pup they have that is a world beater! the grass is always greener on the other leash.

Perry, your post makes a lot of sense. Things are a bit faster paced than days gone by.

I guess most likely a different mindset by the majority of folks these days vs. bygone days.

guess im kinda bass akwards from everyone else I wont hunt them with another dog until they have treed several of their own

I think the biggest problem is people don't hunt them enough 10 times a month isn't enough to make a top dog much less 10 times in 2 years

Not sure just how far back you are calling "bygone" but I saw the same thing you are asking about in 1985 when I seriously started coon hunting. Not very many guys hunted by themselves and there were certainly a lot of 1 1/2-2 1/2 year olds for sale. {I guess on this forum we say "for sell."}
