how hard to push a pup?

Last night my red pup turned the light switch on! First one went in the ground on her, second one she treed about 450 yards from the edge of a corn field.

So... how hard do I need to push her? We've been out about 4 nights in the last week for a couple drops each night..

That all depends on your pup. Pups are just like kids, each one has a different personality.

Thanks guys, it's been almost 20 years since I've messed with a pup and I'm worried to death that I'm going to mess them up.. lol.

She was hot last night, but not as hot as I was after leading her up through the cut timber back to the truck. She was fired up and ready for more.

Richard, as far as personality of the pup, she's a nine month old stick of dynamite on a short fuse. As of right now, she doesn't hunt out over a couple hundred yards, but you don't have to worry about stepping on her either. She's been hunted alone every time she's been out just for the fact that I don't have an old dog to hunt with them.

But just like children....they can become bored easily and you don't want that. Its great that your pup is doing so well for you at 9 months....but as hard as she seems to be going .....4 nights a week is probably too much.
I would probably only take her 2-3 times a week and only for a drop or two and always try to put her up on a good note....or after a lesson in correction and then not take her the next night giving her time to let the last thing she experienced in the woods sink into her memory. There is almost zero risk from not hunting a pup very much at her age....and a huge risk of over doing it with one that age. You will usually not know until it is too late. By the time the pup shows you it is now bored and uninterested.....its too late. If that does happen, the best thing to do is leave them in the kennel for at least a few weeks to a month....the worst thing you can do is try to hunt them through it. Dogs learn by repeatition.....never let them do something you don't like very many times in a row or it will become habit and habits can be hard to break.
If she were mine....I would take her only a couple times a week and just for a drop or two each night and always try to put her up on a note you want her to remember and while she is still fired up and wanting to go.....that way she will be that way in a night or two when you go back out to take her again. I never hunt one hard (3-5 nights a week with multiple drops) until they are 14-16 months old and I rarely ever burn one out or have them back slide.
Good luck, sounds like you have a nice one in the making.

Thanks Shane and to all that replied. I have 2 pups that I've been taking turns with.. so they don't get hunted 2 nights in a row.. one born 11/03/2013 and the other 11/06/2013.

I know the breeding is there (thanks to Ron Swan), I just hope they live up to what the girls named them..
