Coon price crashes at Nafa Auction

http://www.nafa.ca/wp-content/uploa...14-02-22-EN.pdf

This oughta shut down the trappers pretty good. With auction prices like these you'll be lucky to see $8 averages at a country fur buyer in good sections. Prolly won't see much buying going on for southern coon. My buddy is the manager of a fur buying company here in SD. He averaged almost $40 last year on his coons and had a top lot coon bring $98.00. This year he averaged $16.00!!!

I am hound man as well as a trapper. A lot of the get rich quick trappers will be done but die hard trappers will trap no matter what. One thing we should all remember is not one group of outdoorsmen has any more rights to the outdoors than others. You also have to realize last year was a record year for fur prices this year was back close to normal.

I am a fur harvester. I trap, call, hunt with hounds and hunt with terriers. If it will put a hide in the bed of the truck I do it. You are right no one group of outdoorsmen should have more rights to the outdoors than others. The problem is, the majority of trappers have an "I could care less" attitude. I have no problem with ethical trappers who do not infringe upon others ability to enjoy the outdoors. Where I have a problem is with the ones who have no concern for the safety and well being of people's pets. I have absolutely no problem with foot hold traps and snares with relaxing locks, but any lethal trap or snare that is set in anyway that could possibly kill a dog, interferes with my ability to use and enjoy the outdoors. Conibears need outlawed, the trappers are their own worst enemy with those things. Someday a trapper is gonna kill the wrong persons dog and there will be legislative action and national news attention that they don't need. If they would just pull their heads out of their butts, they would see that the juice ain't gonna be worth the squeeze.

I have been coon hunting and trapping for 35 years and I guess its the area I live in but hound men have an attitude for worse than trappers. If there is legislative action that ends trapping it will open the door for all hunting to be targeted. As outdoorsmen we need to all work together to make sure that we will continue to enjoy our sports.

I just started trapping. Did it cause so many folks around here started. They were asking to trap yotes on my coon hunting spots. Spots where I never kill coon and have helped lots get put there. That way I could keep folks I dont know out. I turned every coon back loose. Some minus a few toes but they can still climb Late Jan was the worst. Id almost always catch a coon. Even on the very highest ground. Maybe with all the cheap fur. Some may quit. Not me. Im hooked. My targets are yotes and cats mainly. I only caught 4 coyotes and one cat though. These coyotes are pretty smart critters.

I agrees trapping yotes is a blast! To avoid catching coons try doing more urine post sets. Next winter when it snows find a set of coyote tracks and follow them, you will get tons of ideas for sets just by studying how coyotes travel, what they do, where they mark their territory, etc.

Almost all I set was posts and flat sets. Only a couple dirt holes. I never caught a possum. We are ate up with them. It dont snow here much but it did once this yr. Thats how I caught 2 coyotes. They were crossing a field where I never expected it. Then once I set 11 traps. Only had 12. Next day they were all dug out. Best I can tell. I got some kind of scent on them. Now I have 32 traps. Im ready for Dec.

Well sounds like you got things pretty well figured out. Dug up traps may very mean that they are smelling something on them. But it can also mean that the trap wasn't bedded good enough. Make sure when you bed your trap that it is rock solid before you do your final sift over. If a coyote steps on the edge of the trap and it moves at all they feel it and it makes them curious. Result, dug up traps.

I have no quarrel with the good trappers, mine is with the "junk" trappers that set traps everywhere. It seems that as soon as coon hides hit $5.00 we see traps set everywhere. I had a young dog caught this winter with three traps set in the open around a den tree, baited with cattle cubes. In our state, if you don't own the land, you must post your traps at the entrance to the property, and your traps must have your name on them. I had permission on the place and there was no name on the traps or posted signs. Probably some kid, but a good set won't catch my dog, but a junk set will. Tom

I'm only speaking for my area that's all I know about but around here the only ones that trap are the ones that are to lazy to work!!!! But thankfully they don't use are there not enough of them that I haven't see any connibear traps but they are suppose to be in no less than 8 inches of water !! I think it's something like that but it would suck to have a dog killed in a trap like that !! It is uncalled for !! IMO those traps are any trap that could be lethal to a bigger animal dog etc... Should be outlawwed !!! Jmo I do not see where there is any room for traps like that these days !!!

Taxidermy folk around here will pay pretty good for odd colored coyotes. Just so happens. 2 I caught were odd. One had a pretty good patch of white on its sides. The other was a smoke black color. Id buy all coon live if that was legal here but its not. Crazy. We can sale a live yote or fox but not a coon. Taxidermist will buy cats to but I only got one of them. Having it garment tanned for the wall.

I had a dog run over by a car once, maybe cars should be outlawed too. I would like to believe that mature outdoorsman would be more carefull with supporting any laws to ban a mans freedom to enioy anything outdoor related. Your freedom may be on the ballot next

Stupidest analogy ever. There is a huge difference between a car driving down a road and a trap that is designed to kill whatever sticks it's head in it. Last I checked cars don't have delicious smelling bait and their sole purpose is not to kill. Like I said I am all for responsible trapping, and I would gladly let my dog out foothold traps for the rest of my life if I didn't have to worry about a conibear. Practically every culvert and bridge around here had one in it last fall. Heck one bridge had four of them under it!

conibears all right without bait then? if we spent half as much time talking up outdoor sports to non hunters and fighting antis and instead of pecking at each other we would be better off. if we are not carefull one day we will find ourselves sitting around with dumb looks on our faces telling each other how great our dogs where in the good old days when we could hunt, trap and fish. and do not tell me about laws and rights. we lost trapping in a bunch of places and running our hounds in others. courts over turn the will of the people everyday. if folks have a problem with family keep it in house, not where our enemies can use it against us. you all have a GREAT DAY.

Analogy

The anolgy posted in previous post seem to be that if there were no conibear traps that dogs would be safe. That's just like saying that if there were no ar rifles people would not get killed by a gunman. My analogy still stands. I do not believe I have ever seen where a LEGALLY set 6" (160) conibear has killed a dog, maybe you can show me the proof. I'm always up for some learning.

It seems as though you are for the rights of trappers and outdoorsmen, as long as it's by your rules. We all need to stand together or we risk loosing it all, all of us meaning ALL of us. I've heard of 1 dog that was killed in my area in the last 20 yrs by a conibear and it was set illegally and was 8" (220). That's how long I've been coonhunting and that's the only time I'm aware of. Thanks for allowing me to express my opinions.

I ain't talking about 160's this might be surprising to you but some states allow 220's on dry ground. When I said there where 4 Conibears under one bridge last year I meant 4 buckets or wooden cubbies each baited with fish with a 220 conibear over them. I have been lucky so far and haven't had one of my dogs killed by one but I know lots and lots of people who have. Congratulations on living in a state that actually has taken some common sense steps towards protecting dogs and pets, wish I was as lucky. I dare you to come up here and turn your dog loose on public ground this winter. It's about as fun as playing Russian roulette.

Oh yeah, and in SD all of the road ditches are public land and open to trapping too. As long as you are more than 660 feet from a house just plop your bucket and conibear down and go. Real fun out here when coon prices are getting close to $30 on the carcass. SMH!!!

So are you looking for a size restriction like we have? Your original statement, I believe, was to outlaw conibear traps. Mo has right of way trapping also.
