When u buy a pup do u normally buy a male or female?just curious.normally I get females so I can chose wat studs to breed to and have had some good ones.not taking anything away from males but I'm not in the greatest area to have a stud dog.

I generally prefer to hunt gyp's , but I have never really thought about breeding when I purchase a pup .

This is a good question...I started coon hunting in 1978. I coon hunted hard from 1985 until 1994. I quit back then and just got back into it this past fall. One of the things I was surprised to see is the fact that people in the market for a pup back 20 years ago just about all wanted a male. Everyone was stuck on the dream of big dollars for a top notch stud dog. Many competition hunters found it a disadvantage having a female because it sure seemed like the hunt you most wanted to try to win was the time she was in heat.
Now what I see is that you just about have to kiss tail to get a decent bred female from any breeder. What a big turn around!!! I think most folks realize that it is easier to make money with a female.
One out of 100, if that, makes a top notch stud dog. There is a whole entire country full of good males and you can breed to any one of them, it just takes money. With a female you don't really even have to have one that will tree a coon...all she has to do is come in heat and have fairly decent papers {breeding} and you will make some money selling puppies. I'm not advocating that any one do that but it definitely happens too much.
But really more so than all the above I think most people have finally gotten over the idea that the sire does it all as far as how the pups will turn out and the dam is just that thing out in the kennel that has them. I think the proper credit the dam deserves is finally being given.

I like a male hunting dog. I deal with enuff females around this house as it is.

Yep...I gotta agree. My experience is that a lot of females tend to be "moody" for lack of a better term. And I am not trying to be funny here. Not all of them but some of the ones I've owned seemed to be inconsistent in the way they hunted with or interacted with different dogs. They are touchy about attention...if I pet or talk to the female in the kennel it is O.K. but let me pet up or talk to any of the others and the female starts barking or whining. It's a problem that I am not giving her all the attention. She wont tree as good if she don't get there first.

well coty i agree we are in the wrong part of the country to have a popular stud for the most part. now AI has made things a little better over the more recent years. hopefully AI will improve more in the convinence area as more time goes by.
also i feel the breed programs has some effect on this also.
i guess it depends on the plans you have 4 the pup your getting.
maybe people arent training as many males for resale?

Both have pros and cons.Ive always liked females for some odd reason and it ant for breeding.I kept a male and female from my last litter and so far like the males personality better.I got my fingers crossed he turns into a coondog and heads up my kennel.Long shot though lol.

Good responses.i like training males to,but growing up my dad had beagles and still does and he always had a few females and only one male at all times.ive kind of stuck with that myself.not to say things couldn't change and I'm not saying that's the right way.

yeppers when I ran them swampers with beagles , my pack was three gyps and a good male dog . made the perfect pack .and when they started getting old and slowing down we didn't have to go looking for a top stud dog with the intent of selling pups from a name , we just used our own stock . we judged dogs by the number of bunnies on the tailgate at the end of the day lol

and even our coondogs was the same way we had several gyps and a good male dog around the house and had hide hunters lined up at the feed store wanting to breed their gyps to that grade walker dog lol but that was before the interweb and a coon hide was worth more than a shiney trophy or fancy title lol .

Dad always goes with a male dog. But myself, I like a male, Because you don't have to worry about the whole coming in heat issue. But for some reason I always pick a female pup. To me they are smarter, learn faster, and handle better. Some of the best coon dogs I have ever owned has been gyps. But dad has always had good luck with males. The last 2 I have bought have been gyp's. I got a buddy that just had pups out of 2 dandy bluetic hounds he owns and I think this time I'm going with a male. But who know I may go gyp when I pick.

i like to have a good female around but as far as hunting etc.
i would rather have a male bigger stronger and faster in every
sport.a female is a lot more work and will always come in on
you when you want her the most.
