when is a dog not a pup anymore

just wondering i have 2.5 year old dog that is one of the best dogs ive had. just wondering wat age is it not a must to knock coon out to ur dog. i have a friend that didnt shoot any out to his 3 year old dog all summer and says he just quit treeing. i dont want that to happen! i also have a 1year old female that is doing really good. i dont want to shoot coon out of season. should i just stay home.

You are placing WAY too much importance on putting coons out to your dog.

.

Your dog doesn't tree because your going to knock out a coon. Just like Deer Dogs don't run a deer because they are going to catch it, most never see one. Fox hounds see and catch very few fox also.

It is important to let the dog tell you what it needs. Be very responsive to your dogs actions in all areas of life. Some dogs need more coon than others, dog trainers have different opinion on this subject and some will knock out every coon. Some knock only a few. Sounds like you have a good one.

Think about all the slick treeing walkers everyone talks about. There is no coon there to shoot out and that doesn't slow them down.

pup not a pup

To answer your question about when is a pup no longer a pup.I feel when a dog can pretty consistantly tree an easy coon by themselves they are no longer a pup but i consider them a started dog. This is regardless of age.As far as age i consider a dog no longer a pup at 8-10 months old.No such thing as a 21/2year old pup.jmo.

it depends if you want a dog that will just tree coon or if you want one that could win a world Cham. ship, the year Dicky's Sandy won the world hunt i killed every coon she treed for 2 months before the world hunt to her.

for the response about the dogs dont chase to catch. my coyote dogs chase to kill. we take no guns with us and u can tell those dogs love it. but i myself. if i went hunting for a girl friend every night and all i get is a little pet on the head and no more i have a feeling id be a lil discouraged. but what i am gathering is it wont hurt my dogs to not have a coon for months at a time. but if i want them better i need to keep the coon comin? never meant he was a pup. that is just wat im kind of basing my question on. hes not finished but he is a pleasure to hunt and very reliable. and i dont want to screw that up.

lol well like my granddaddy all ways said . A DOG SHOULDN'T BE WELL STARTED AT TWO YEARS OLD IT SHOULD BE PLUM WORN OUT !!! . but different dogs progress at different levels . some start early some late .

but my philosophy is 18 months on gyps and two years for males .

you are right,,,let your dog tell you what he wants,,,my dog could care less about ever seeing a coon,,but man can he them em,and any of them,,,my dog love being loved on at the tree,,,that means more to him than seeing a coon,,,I shoot coon down to him,and he chews on it acouple times and that's it,but you love him up at the tree, and he'll stay there all night, and he only needs 2 more wins to be grand...
