JUST WONDERING HOW MUCH LONGER MR GENE HICKS IS GONNA HAVE TO WAIT BEFORE HE GETS HIS LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP. LOOKS TO ME LIKE HE IS LONG OVERDUE.
MAN HAS DEVOTED MANY YEARS TO BLACK AND TANS.
JUDGED BENCH SHOWS , FIELD REP,MASTER HOUNDS.

Todd anyone can be nominated ,, you need to write a latter have it to the board before January of next year

I did it for John Woods , and never heard nothing about it , I noted all of his wins and most of his dogs that he did it with ,,, there are a lot of people that deserve to be life time members , but John by far deserves it above a lot of people ,

He has won with ever blood line out there and won big hunts with his dogs , and unlike most of us black n tan people He is not stuck on any certain pedigree ,, as long as its black and trees a coon he will hunt it

Yep every one has an opinion.

Mine is Mr. Lawton Robinson. He has served on the ABTCHA board was the chairman of the ABTCHA board, Served on the rules committee for the ABTCHA, Vice President of the ABTCHA for 2 yrs, and was the President of the ABTCHA for 2 yrs.
Now if you want to talk about what he has won, ok. He has won High scoring Black dog at AO, High scoring Black dog at the Winter classic, 1st Place Gr.Nt Black and Tan Days, was the high scoring black dog at the UKC world hunt and placed 8th in 2008 if I remember right. He's won the Arkansas state hunt. He has finished over 20 Gr.Nt.Ch. and who knows how many he has produced. The list goes on and on.
So who really deserves to be elected Lifetime Membership to the ABTCHA. Nobody has done as much for the Association and for the Breed (that's not already a lifetime member) than Lawton Robinson.

My opinion but its all facts.

great guys mentioned and well deserving!
Here is the criteria from the association website:

Lifetime membership shall be bestowed upon a member of the
American Black and Tan Coonhound Association for dedicated service to the Association subject to the following qualifications:

a. The recipient to be a minimum of 60 at the time of the selection unless he or she is physically disabled. If disabled, this age requirement may be waived by the majority vote of the Board of Directors.
b. The recipient must have been a member of the American Black and Tan Coonhound Association, Inc. for 5 years immediately preceding his or her nomination and a member of the American Black and Tan Coonhound Association, Inc. for the year of his or her nomination. Nominations must be made in writing by a member of the Association to the President of the Association at least ninety (90) days before the beginning of Black and Tan Days. From the written nominations, the Board of Directors, by majority vote, may select one nominee whose name shall be submitted to the general membership meeting at Black and Tan Days for approval by a majority vote by secret ballot by the members in attendance. Any nominee whose name is not submitted by the Board of Directors to the general membership for vote may be renominated in the future.

Thats right Ron,thats another man that has done a lot.

At a pace of only one man a year getting nominated, several deserving men wll be dead and gone before they ever see it happen.
MAYBE TWO OR THREE A YEAR NEED TO GO IN. Heck these guys are knocking 70 or older, man dont live forever.

To me, "dedicated service to the Association" means just that.

If a man goes and wins a bunch, then good for him but he already got his recognition. If he has good friends that will campaign for him, then good for him.

However, this is jmo, but I see lifetime membership as a way to recognize those who don't necessarily pound the hunts or shows, but work extremely hard for the ABTCHA and the breed. They serve as an officer and are working at B&T Days, not just enjoying themselves. They also support the breed as a whole and other fanciers with a spirit of teamwork. To award this to those that have not done this, diminishes and cheapens the award, imo.

I'm not saying Gene and Lawton aren't deserving. I'd say they both probably are, especially Lawton.

When you go to B&T Days, look around for those older guys who are carrying show benches, taking entries, helping get casts to the woods, serving as MOH, and going to board meetings. They should be on the short list for an award. jmo.

I was talking to someone else about this recently. Only taking one a year, there will be several well-deserving guys and gals who never get Lifetime membership because they pass away first. Look at Doc Vinson for an example. He passed away just months after receiving it. What if we had waited another year? My opinion? Start taking 2 or 3 a year so we can start getting some of these guys in.

Let's face it, there is a long list of guys who are more than worthy to receive it. I'd vote for Art, Lawton, or Gene equally. All have promoted the breed and helped the association as officers or directors or both. But there are plenty more as well. Let's get these guys in!

Just as Lawton. Maybe we need to look at allowing more than one nomination per year.

ALL MENTIONED ARE WELL DESERVING CANIDATES! AND ARE CONSIDERED GOOD FRIENDS OF MINE, AND BLACK AND TAN BROTHERS! WE THE ASSOC. MEMBERS VOTE IN THE BOARD MEMBERS! WHOM MAKE THIS SELECTION ANNUALLY ALL IT TAKES IS A LITTLE READING TO KNOW THIS PROCESS! IT IS IN YOUR YEARBOOKS AND ANNUAL NEWSLETTER HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE US BE ABLE TO VOTE IN MORE THAN ONE A YEAR! DUE TO HEALTH REASONS OR OTHER RELATED CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS WOULD BE A GOOD TOOL TO WORK WITH IF IT WAS VOTED IN! I DID SEND IN A NOM. THIS YEAR AND HIS NAME IS GENE HICKS! NUFF SAID!!

That's not true Todd. I'm going strictly on FACTS and criteria.

The SELECT FEW are the ones that the general membership put in place to do these kind of jobs along with countless others. So you want them to do some jobs just not all of them.

The general membership does vote to allow that one person in or rejects them.

About allowing more than one a year. That was brought up a few years ago and the general membership voted it down.

If I remember correctly Gene served as President of the Assc for at least one term if not two......I know over the yrs you had to be in the "clique" to be honored... With just one person being selected each yr some are going to pass on before being selected....... Off the top of my head I can think of five or six guys who have paid their dues by helping the Assc and hunting blk dogs that should be honored.

This is another reason for ballots to be mailed to all members to vote for Officers and other things. Majority of membership don't attend B&T Days as they are just B&T men and not competition hunters. It would make them feel like they were part of something and not just getting a yrbook. Take the yrbook away and I'd bet membership would drop by 70%.. Already down by 800+ from past yrs but a lot of that is coon hunting is a dying sport. With urban sprawl there are less and less places to hunt and more hard surface rds.

Might not be a bad idea to select two members for the Lifetime award with a minimum age requirement...

I can't believe it but John D. and I finally agree on something

Don't diminish the lifetime membership award.

Now there is also an award for members for dedicated service award. Read the qualifications for both and you can see they really are 2 different qualifications. Maybe the Assoc. could put a list of the members in the yearbook of dedicated service award and the year they were recognized.

I will say for qualifying for lifetime membership I believe Article III, Section E, Paragraph C should be changed.
Now here is why, If they are semi retired or retired and have the time to dedicate themselves and are willing to work for the Assoc as a board member or Officer. Why should they not be able to receive this award while in office? I think it should be reworded to where it would say a officer or board member could not nominate someone until they were out of office for 1 yr. nor could a nomination be accepted from a family member while the nominee was in office.

It's odd that when it comes to many issues like single registration , letting more than one lifetime member a year in , etc .... the voters at B&T Days seem to vote different than what we think most would and even from what you'd think the " old guard" would too ... I like the ballot idea , the sample voters at B&T days don't seem to reflect the majority or even the expected minority ....

Well I guess you couldn't remember correctly as Gene was not President of the Assoc.

There is a minimum age requirement for a lifetime member.

The general membership does vote to allow that one person in or rejects them.

About allowing more than one a year. That was brought up a few years ago and the general membership voted it down.

Ralph,I will take you at your word when u say thats not true.
And,I DO APPOLOGIZE,I would like to think personal feelings would not reflect on what a man does for this breed and the assoc. So i do appologize.

Maybe we need to take a vote again with the General Membership
to allow more than one, because i feel there are several such as Gene,Lawton,Art and more. These men aint getting any younger and health issues play a roll as Mitch said in his post also.

However you say you list facts ,thats great, but there are MANY facts what Gene has done for the breed and the assoc. I woud also like tosay,if not for adversity and health issues and the loss of a son and wife battling cancer.Gene would have been even more active in the last few years. So please dont hold that against him.

Id like to ad one more thing to this.John Davis you mentioned
a man winning hunts has done been rewarded and recognized
for his acheivements. I just gotta say this: IF IT WASNT FOR THESE OLE BOYS OUT HERE BEATING THE TIMBER AND PROMOTING THE BNT COONHOUND,THERE WOULDNT BE ANY ASSOC. SO I DO THINK A MAN THAT DEVOTES HIS TIME AND LIFE TO BNTS ,DESERVES MORE THAN JUST HIS RECOGNITION FOR WINNING.
HE SHOULD ALSI BE RECOGNIZED AS DEDICATED BNT MAN AND ASUPPORTER OF THE BREED. NOT TRYING TO BE A SMART A##,JUST STATING WHAT I THINK.

THE MEN PUSHING THESE DOGS AND HITTING THE TIMBER AND TRAVELING EVERY WEEKEND TO A HUNT SOMEWERE ,DEFFINATELY DESERVE CREDIT FOR THERE EFFORTS.
