Briddle Toe Nail/Quick showing?

Need some help from anyone that has dealt with a hound that has ripped a toe nail off or has most of the quick showing.
Do you just keep it clean and leave it alone to grow out? Is there some type of healing gel anyone has used as protection for this reason? I have clipped some of the splintered nail away, cause it was creating pressure on the meaty quick. To be honest I feel a little helpless. This hound has splintered a nail once before, is there a vitaman supplement that would help keep this from occuring? Any thoughts would be much appreicated. Thanks!

I had one that either ripped off or cracked every toenail on one foot, never bothered him but the ones that broke off, the quick is now shorter than it is on the rest of his toes

i had one like that a few months ago. I tried hunting him but when he treed it would start bleeding so i just layed him up for 2 months till it grew out. Now i trim his toes every 2 weeks just to keep them as short as possable so they dont break. Other than that there isn't much you can do
