I have a friend that has a problem with a 6 year old walker female just not sure what the problem is . any help would be greatly appreciated . dog was in great shape and being hunted regularly and was VERY accurate, winter set in and dog was layed up over two months now weather has gotten better and she's being hunted regular again and she has turned into a slick treeing idiot.in the last two weeks she has had at least 6 nights she was 0 for 3 and one night she was 4 for 4.. I hunted with her before the lay up and she was a very fast track driving hard treeing , accurate dog now she is just pulling up short constantly. he doesn't know what to do with her. All I can think of is maybe a medical problem of some sort. she is in my opinion about 12- 15 lbs. overweight. Any ideas? this dog has a bit of money won in pkc and a 3rd in a ukc qualifier with over 100 dogs,so she can get it done.

I'd have her thyroid checked, and also have her tested for Erlichia (not sure on that spelling).

Has it been just the last week or 2???


I've been behind 2 dogs and the story was VERY similar....I think it was the weather change... It was warm and breezy after being cold and wet...made for tough tracking conditions and mold on the forest floor...plus breeding season and sows running dogs away from dens I think....

Now that the ground is wet again they are both back to normal...

They looked like idiots for a while treeing 1/3 or so and tracks that sounded pathetic...


I have noticed there are a few times of year it can be tough...this being one of them..the other being a heavy leaf drop in the fall....the other is if you have a lot of flowery ground cover blooming...

I would have her checked for tick diseases. They can look real bad when they have one of those.

Next time my dog slick trees I'm gonna tell everybody present that she needs her thyroid checked..lol...I've seen several dogs do some serious slick treeing lately.One was mine and several others were not.I have no good explanation for it.Seems the changing weather and the coons smelling different could be the cause.Id continue to hunt her and I'd say she will get back in the grove.Loosing some of that weight should make a difference. At the end of the night a slick tree is still a slick and no hunter enjoys looking at many of those.

Could be caused by her heat cycle. I have a female now that does the same thing when she is about to come into heat and after she goes out of heat. She has always come out of it in time but it does add to the time you can hunt her due to her heat cycle. And of course she comes into heat in October and April. Which are IMO the best times of the year to hunt. So when she puts together 3-4 bad nights in a row struggling with tracks and empty trees, I know she is about to come into heat or I need to wait another week to take her.

NOT MAKING EXCUSES FOR THEM, BUT THIS IS ALWAYS A TOUGH TIME OF THE YEAR TO TREE COON. FROST COMING OUT ETC. NOT SAYIN YOU SHOULD SLACK OFF ON CORRECTION EITHER, JUST BEAR WITH THEM, IT'LL GET BETTER FOR MOST.

I've noticed that a lot of dogs pull slick this time of year and often I notice it to be the track dogs than anything ... The coon finders/tree checkers seem to be the ones looking the best right now . I blame it on the change of weather and the decaying leaves from last fall throwing off large amounts of nitrogen . Call me crazy but that's my theory. .

also , every dog I've ever seen coming out from being sat up and fat in the kennel ... Looks sharp the first few nights and then start looking like crap.... The adrenaline wears off after a couple nights and after that ya gotta get on them a little bit . May be time she gets an azz whippin

I got a almost 4 year old doing the same thing. He is 0 for 6 in 2 night of hunting. But 2 of them were dens. Method I'm using is cut a switch Bust his A$$ and send him on. I have noticed the last 2 trees he has started to circle again before pulling up last 2 were dens.

Don't know about other places but around here lately the coon have been on the move all times of the day. When we cut loose right at dark and are running cold tracks I'm pretty sure that's making it a little tougher on the dogs.

I dont guess they will be any treed this week at the super stakes. With the pollen falling,leaves a rotting and changing of the seasons, heat cycles and odd coon movement times. I like hootowlmans therapy myself but if it continues. I'd be getting a vet check.

I have a female that I wouldn't sell but this weekend I probably couldn't give away. Most accurate dog I've owned and she has been slicking like crazy this weekend. She is just starting to swell up. Went to 2 hunts this weekend and neither cast had plus. The one hunt I don't think any registered cast had plus.

I don't know? I went to an RQE last night and we scored on 4 coons and had a dead cast. I just blame it on junk dogs.
