How many nights?

I know there isn't an exact number that a young dog should be hunted before it's ruled as a cull but my name has recently been bashed by a breeder on this board because I culled a 2 yr old dog because it wouldn't tree after 50 quality nights of hunting in top coonhunting country. I was under the impression that 50 nights was more than fair. How many nights do you guys give a dog before making that decision?

Travis

I don't really put a certain number of nights on a young dog but I expect them to start treeing in way less nights than that. If I had to put a number it would be more like 20 nights, lots of variables tho.

I'll put it this way, if that Jack pup isn't treeing after 20 good hunts. Move on, start over. The young dogs I've kept around didn't need 50 nights. The ones that did look that way are not eating my feed

just re read

I've not Ever kept a 2yr old that hadn't been treeing atleast for 6mths. I try to start mine around 1yr old. Most will start younger than a year but I don't like messing with them younger than a yr. But 2 no way man

Yeah I don't expect perfection in that amount of time but if a dog isn't giving me some promising effort by then, they're a goner.

More than fair.

Some guys can't admit that every single pup out of their stuff isn't awesome. Just a lack of reality. Seriously, fifty nights in Missouri??? That is more than enough to decide if a dog is going to make it or not. Especially a freakin two year old!

I know of a breeder on this board that accepts 20-30 hunts to make Nt.Ch. Wow. That is some real goals there. lol

I applaud you for not accepting less than what you think is right. You gave the cull about 25 more hunts than I would have.

The decision to cull is one that is between a man and what he wants, and no one else.

I like to see steady progression, but if I see that the dog just doesn't have the goods and I have been hunting him for what I see as a reasonable amount of time....then he/she has got to go.

They all don't make it. And "making it" is different from house to house.

Stand by your decision and roll on brother, don't settle for less than what you want.

I agree with Kent,no dog gets that kinda chance here.If they don't show something here after ten nights they are gone no questions ask.To each his own,but we want early starting pups that show steady progression.A two year old that is not showing anything dose not cut it here.Keep doing it your way Travis, don't worry about what the computer coonhunter says.

How long

You gave it long enough. I know of a cross that had 5 titled dogs by the time they were two, there were 7 pups in that litter but two were absolute duds, and they got hunted a lot longer than they should of because of their litter mates success. Some just don't have it even with the best breeding behind them, Jim.

I agree

I agree with everybody. U have had more patients than I would. I have been in your shoes for years. I have culled to many for the money I have spent. It's very aggravating. I made my mind up awhile back. If I can't get any interest out of a dog after I have done the things I feel is sufficient then gone. Sometimes I have done this with ones than have only been to the woods a hand full of times. Example. If I take a pup six months old full with him on a few drags. Turn some coons loose and take him for some hunts all alone just down the creek or around a corn field or through a easy flat woods. If he dosent show me natural ability like hunting out a little opening after I have killed him some turn loose coons with other dogs and such he may leave then. Most will say I am nuts that's ok I know what I am looking for. If they can't do this kind of stuff than I feel I haven't done my part in trying to promote a dog that is worth of either Sireing a litter or Whelping a litter. I am tired of hearing Redbones just start later than other breeds and all the other bs excuses. I have finally got a young dog that I can say I hope to be back competing with as long as he don't get killed or something stupid happens to him. Good Luck Travis do it your way you pay the feed bill and take care of them.

I LET A PUP GROW UP DON'T MATTER WHAT BREED THEY HAVE BEEN IN PAST YRS. A PUP MUST BE A PUP BEFORE HE OR SHE WILL EVER BECOME A COONDOG IF THEY HAVE IT IN THEM.

THERE'S NO WAY I WOULD HUNT A DOG 50 NIGHT'S & THEM NOT BE DOING SOMETHING AFTER THAT MANY NIGHT I DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF TIME EACH TO THERE OWN.

IF A DOG HAS IT IN THEM I'VE SEEN THEM START 1st NIGHT OUT TO 1-10 NIGHTS OUT I'VE ALWAYS SAID I WON'T PUSH ONE AROUND IN A WHEELBARROW TILL THERE 8 YRS. OLD TO SEE IF THEY WILL MAKE IT & I'VE SEEN GUY'S PRETTY MUCH DO THIS HAUL THEM AROUND TILL THERE DEAD OF OLD AGE THINKING TONIGHT WILL BE THE NIGHT THEY COME ON & GET RIGHT,,,,NO,,,,NO !

I WAIT TILL THERE AROUND 1 YR. OLD TO START THEM SEEMS LIKE I HAVE BETTER LUCK WITH THEM. I'VE SEEN SO MANY START OUT REAL YOUNG & THEY BLOW UP OR @ 18 MONTHS THERE DOING WHAT EVER THEN @ 3 YRS. OLD THERE THE SAME DOG AS THEY WERE @ 18 MONTH'S, THEY NEVER GOT ANY BETTER I'VE HAD GUY'S TO TELL ME THEY WISH THEY HAD WAITED TILL HE OR SHE WAS OLDER TO HAVE STARTED THEM.

BUT THE LAST 2 THAT WERE STARTED WERE AROUND 16 MONTHS OLD & U CAN NEVER TELL IT @ THIS AGE THEY ARE READY IF THERE EVER GOING TO DO ANYTHING AS A MATTER A FACT THE BEST DOG I EVER OWNED WAS ALMOST 17 MONTHS OLD BEFORE HE WAS HUNTED & HE WAS ALL COONDOG DON'T CARE WHO OWNED HIM.

LONG STORY SHORT IN 15 NIGHT'S U BETTER BE SHOWING ME SOMETHING GOOD TO EAT OUR FEED. THATS GIVING THEM ABOUT 5 EXTRA NIGHT'S. THEY WILL NOT BE SOLD OFF TO SOMEONE ELSE TO LET THEM WASTE THERE TIME EITHER THE BUCK STOP'S HERE. WE ALL ONLY HAVE SO MUCH TIME ON EARTH WHY WASTE IT ON A HOUND.

ONCE A DOG SPILT TREES FROM THE OTHER DOGS 2-3 TIME'S THEY WILL ((ONLY BE HUNTED BY THEMSELFS)) THREW THE WEEK IF THERE LUCKY ONE NIGHT ONE DROP WE MIGHT CUT THEM WITH ANOTHER DOG WE DON'T FEED 2 DOG'S TO TREE 1 COON THATS THE WAY THERE TRAINED HERE AFTER THEY LEAVE HERE IT'S UP TO THAT OWNER TO KEEP THEM ON THE RIGHT TRACK. THE BEST ONE'S ARE MADE ONE ON ONE 5-7 NIGHT'S A WEEK IF U WANT A REAL COONDOG. TRUST ME THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE A COONDOG BEEN @ THIS AROUND 50 YRS. NOW. ((BUT STILL CAN LEARN SOMETHING KNEW)) ! BUT I'M STAYING WITH THE WAY WE TRAIN THEM IT SEEM'S TO WORK REAL WELL FOR US HERE.

Every dog is different much like people ! Lets be realistic though some have it and some don't ! But let's be realistic about this too ! Some peoples training can bring it out of a dog and some people's training can't ! This goes back to a question that I have asked many times on this board and not got much of a answer ! Coonhunter vrs Houndsmen ! Some are just coonhunters and then there are Houndsmen the coonhunter just takes there dog hunting and because of natural instinct they tree a coon ! The Houndsmen take there dog hunting and they how to bring the best in there dog to the surface !
