Years ago they used polling to come up with numbers, Nielson comes to mind there. They would send out packet to folks chosen, ask that you record what was being viewed at what time, come up with numbers when they got forms back .
Today I guess the NSA supplies all they need to know .... just kidding uncle sam !

Our Dnr here knows exactly how many deers we have and how many are killed each yr by calling a 1000 people and asking how many they kilt. That's a 1000 out of over 300,000 lmao! So maybe the networks do that .

I have wondered this too ... I beleive since the switch over to digital receivers they know what everyone's watching even if you don't have satalite TV . The days of just an antenna are over even without a satalite you have to have a digital receiver (converter box) to watch regular free public broadcast . It would be know harder to track than cell phone calls - it's all using satelite signals & or towers .

There are hackers that can turn the camera on your tv & computer from thousands of miles away as frightening as that is - it's happening . They say it's still through neilson's that these #'s are compiled , through phone polls & or x amount of boxes installed in homes w/ ok consent of homeowner . Then they have some mathmatical equation to get their #'s .
I personally believe through satalite technology & computer data bases they know what we are watching just like they know who we call , text , e-mail , gooogle ect.... maybe I'm just paranoid lol but the technology is there .

Those ratings typically refer to Nielsen Ratings. Nielsen is a company that collects data about what people are watching in one of two ways: asking people through surveys, and installing boxes in the home that record what you are watching.

Some friends of mine were a Nielsen family for a while. They got some nifty benefits out of the deal, such as discounts on a new TV and some free stuff from their Nielsen representative. However, in the end they decided it was more trouble than it was worth. The box connected to their TV was very needy. They would have to get up and push a button every time they changed channels, and I think they also needed to get up and push the button every once in a while just to let Nielsen know they were still watching, even if they didn't change the channel for a while.

Every night the data collected by the box is sent to Nielsen over the phone line, like fax or internet.

So unless you participate in a Nielsen or other rating program, no one has any idea what you are watching. At least, not at this point. Perhaps in the future cable boxes might be able to incorporate devices that will gather this information, but I hope that doesn't come to pass. That's a little too "big brother" for me
