I would call the DNR and ask. I went up to Michigan and hunted with a guy. I called the DNR and they said as long as I didn't have a gun on me and I wasn't running a dog I did not need a license.

In NC you would have to have a license even if you are just sitting in the truck.

they are trying to give you a tickit, the law reads in Michigan if you are partacking in the hunt you need a license, partacking is if you are in the woods with a light.

Illinois

As long as the person is not carrying a gun or shining the trees he can go without a hunting lic in Illinois. I emailed Illinois CO Office and that was reply. The person also cant make any game calls or carry game animals.

Skip,

Partaking is not used in any text relating to taking raccoons, hunting with dogs, or use of lights.

I take great lengths to stay up on Michigan laws related to coon hunting or our dogs.

I could post all of the regulations related to hunting dogs, but all that would do is take up a lot of space with no real mention other than a owner of a dog hunting in Michigan requires a license. There are many more regulations of bear hunting with dogs.

The unfortunate fact of the matter is that Michigan Conservation Officers are given a large latitude to interpret our game laws.

All of the conservation officers I have spoken to say if you are not carrying a gun, do not shoot a coon out, do not carry the coon, do not lead a dog or otherwise handle a dog you are not required to have a license. I have never heard that if you carry a light you need a license. That would be just plain dumb. I would contend that if someone was given ticket because they accompanied hunters while carrying a light could easily be contested in court.

Here is just one part, but I suspect a judge shown this would throw the charge out.

6.3 Hunting with dogs, license requirement.
Sec 6.3 The following persons chasing or locating game with dogs during the open season for that game, except as provided in section 2.1a, shall have a current valid hunting license for the game being chased or located:
(a) Any person possessing a firearm, crossbow, or bow and arrow.
(b) The owner, when present, of any dog chasing or locating bear or bobcat.

Yep, it doesn't even mention raccoons.

Larry

well larry tell that to the man that was with me the night the Co wrote him a ticket, that is what he wrote him up for, partacking in the hunt with out a huntting licence, and he was standing at the truck, and he did fight it and lost,

the only time you do not need a licence in Mich. is during training season unless you have a gun , and if you have a gun in your truck in Mich. in a area that has birds or wildlife in it you better have a licence or you will get a ticket.

now i might live in IND now but i lived in Mich my hole life untill 2001 when you hunt 7 nights a week year round, you learn the laws, and one of my best friends is the retired CO that tried to catch me many of nights.
you can do what you want just do not get on hear and treat some one like there (as You said it ) dumb i'm not a dumb person i have been busted 15 times in my life and have beet it every time, so i think i have a pretty good understanding of the laws and the laws are just like the night hunt rules it depends on who is inturpenting them. Have a nice day

Got checked in Ohio a couple years ago with a buddy that didn't have his license. I had one gun and two dogs (both were mine). Told the warden that my buddy had just rode up with me to keep me company while I drove and hunted. He was OK with it and didn't write any tickets. I think they are all different and it just depends on what kind of mood they are in on that particular night.

I know for SE Walker days last year in NC we hunted the slam events and the Allen Shoe then on Fri night they gave everyone a weekend permit to run dogs. Not sure what that was about.
