pup question..

all my son wants for christmas is a pup that he can raise and train, and while we have several young dogs, we have never raised one from a pup, my question is can you ruin a pup by handing it too much? letting it stay in the house etc?? treating it more like a pet than a hunting dog? i know my boy will want to spend alot of time with it but dont want to make it where it wont hunt either as it gets older..

No I have Grand nites that spend more time in the house than in the kennel. The more you handle them the more they learn and will adapt better with other people and dogs. plus when a pup is right there with you all the time it will get you to walk out and lay little drags and stuff more offten to help build there knowledge.

I had a b&t as a bear dog that my mmom spoiled but when it got dark and I got in the truck that dog knnew his place and was actually one of the best dogs that I ever owned I had a few redbones that I kept inside as well and they were some of the best coon dogs I ever owned....the more they're used to to and u treat the good the better they will perfoemm for u and the easier they are to train I think espically as a pup....jmo gl with ur sons pup be sure he picks one out that he likes and he will be more prone to be more attached to it as well....gl and have fun with it.

I got three I let in the house time to time. They love it though I keep it short. The only down side I can think of concerning letting your boy get overly attached and treating it as a pet is "what if it don't turn out". Best case you got a pet hound, or your going to have to teach him a fact of life about coon dogs that don't hunt. Though there are ways around that too. Wish you and your boy the best of luck with that new pup.

Teach'em to stay in the kennel to so they don't howl all night when they get into a skunk and have to be outside for awhile .

One of the easiest pups to train was one we kept inside. He had better manners than a lot of folks I hunt with. Never needed a lead on him only dog I ever had that rode to the woods in the truck with me and my wife. It didn't hurt his abilities in the woods in my opinion he excelled and seemed natural.

A little extra TLC never hurts ... a dog that loves it master wants to please it's master . They tend to be easier to train .
My dogs don't live in the house ...but were brought in plenty when as pups & lugged adound by the kids .
