A older man once told me he puts bells (like you'd put on a goat) on his dog collars when he runs them, he said keeps coyotes off his hounds.
Does anyone else do this?
Tell me what your ideas are.....

That seems to work and putting the lights on their collars seems to work for me also...Seems anything that will associate your hounds with humans keeps them at bay...Of course I don't think this is a proven fact but it seems to hold some truth as they have stayed some distance from my hounds with the lights on their collars.

I had a nice run in with them last night, the dogs was treed, as we were going in.. The coyotes started howling.... I sure don't want my hound ate up... I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for your info.

Just make sure you get the slide on ones and not the clip on ones...The clip on ones are junk and you lose them.

if running a bell helps ease your mind then run bell on your dogs. Everybody has an opinion on this question. In Wisconsin some guys run them to keep the wolves away. some guys say the wolves hear the bells and it acts like a dinner bell letting them know an easy meal is around. I personally have known dogs with bells and without that have had confrontations with wolves and coyotes. I run bells on some of my dogs and others I do not. mostly so I know wear they are when they get close to me and I want to catch them.

I run lights on mine, but I have heard of a hound getting chewed up that was wearing one. If I hear coyotes I've found just talking loudly seems to make them disappear.

I've only ever had a few problems with coyotes messing with my dogs and have never had one chewed up. I started wearing a small bell and a tracker blinking light on their collars and haven't ever heard one barking or howling at them since. Might be coincidence or could be the lights and bells I don't really know. It does help seeing and hearing the dogs when they're not on track or tree so I like them and it hasn't had any negative effect on the dogs hunting. I should note that the few problems I've had with coyotes I'm not sure if they were after the dogs or the dogs got too close to a den. The coyotes got real close to me and the dogs and made a bunch of noise but the dogs didn't react at all.

i ran bells on my beagles i went to buy a beagle he had bells on all his thats what he said it keeps the yotes from gettin after them my buddy runs lights on his hounds think im gonna buy 1 for my hound don't know 1st hand if they will really keep the yotes off the dogs or not

I hate coyotes they can do a number on a dog...Thank God they didn't jump our dogs saturday night.
I am loving this feedback on this.
I am def gonna buy me a couple bells and lights to run on our hounds.

The bells are nice to hear them when close. The light is a life saver if your dog gets in the road. It has to help at least scare a few away. Your best bet is to find a few coyote houndsmen that could help you. They run down all the ones that stand and fight and only leave the ones that run for the next county. Should make a lasting impression. Them coyotes run at the first sound of a hound. But a female near the den. Will fight any dog that threatens.

It would be nice to know if coyotes that attacked dogs with lights during denning time or not.

Coyotes are much more aggressive protecting their den than any other time of the year.

From what I've heard.... They will hang around an area and eat all the wildlife, and domestic cats n such, then they move on to another area. They continue to do this until they make a circle, back to the beginning.
Don't know this to be a fact, just had an old farmer tell me this.

Ran a bell (no lights) on my dog last night with a buddies dog, coyotes started howling- but didn't howl for very long.... Hoping the bell is the reasoning.

I have had the same dog bitten twice by coyotes in 3 years.. Both times it was in late march early april..The second time I had a blue tracker light on her the only thing it did was let me she a blinking blue light flying across a cut bean field and when I put my spot on her there was a coyote right on her butt.. So my evaluation is the light doesn't do much if its during the denning time of the year. And these woods are regularly hunted in the winter by coyote houndsmen. I guess I need to try a bell...

I need to do some research on coyotes. Like what you were speaking of... The denning season, mating, etc... Then maybe get some friends together and hunt some... I'm not sure if it's year round or if there is a season... One things for sure.... They are aggravating!

If your hunting regulations allow it, I would try calling and decoy dog during the denning period. especially, if you already have an idea where they are denning.
