Lack of showing tree when arriving at tree

At what point does it become a fault when arriving at the tree that a hound either wonders around the tree or stops barking at the tree?

To further illustrate, I have a young dog that will tree very hard and will be on the tree until you get close to the tree then he goes quite and will try to wonder around if not tied up. He may very well come out of this as I get some coons out to him as he has not had a lot shot out to him yet.

If he continues to act this way, will it get him minused in a hunt?

dog has to tree until you get there, meeting you off the tree "a little ways" is tolerated in hunts but dog has to go straight back to the tree.

if the dog just wonders off it will get you minused everytime

I had one that would quit treeing when he saw your light. He wouldn't leave the tree but would quit barking. I was told to try turning off your light until he starts treeing again and every time he quits stop and turn your light off. He got the point real quick and doesn't do it any more.

Of course do this correcting while you're training or pleasure hunting not during an actual hunt lol
