Has anybody ever used 17 cal for coonhunting and do they tear up the hides?

I shot 1 out with mine, just because I had just bought it. Coon fell hard and minimal damage. But a buddy of mine said he saw a 17 tear one up pretty good. I just prefer the 22 long. The 17 makes a heck of a CRACK on a quiet night though. Almost too loud.

I use one all the time.. Better gun is the 22 mag.

People always want the loudest dog they can get but don't want a gun to make much noise. People you are trying to hide from know your there before you do any shooting..

I don't understand why they haven't come out with a 22 ballistic tip.

Took mine one night. Sounded like a cannon going off in the woods. Its just a truck gun now. For coyotes and such.

Have a fried that shot a coyote from his kitchen window last week and killed it stone dead with one shot. It was eating apples next to his garden. A few days before that his wife saw one trying to catch a fawn but it saw her and left. The 17 didn't tear it up to bad.

they do in a 22 mag it won't damage the hide but if you shot one in the head it makes for hard skinning. Shatters the skull
