Question for Experienced Breeders

Hey everyone...just arrived home to my female delivering a pup. They were due yesterday. I have been watching her close and she really didn't start nesting until yesterday. This is her first litter. Anyhow, as I went into her kennel, she ran out of the whelping box to greet me, with a pup hanging out.The male was dead, the sac had been removed, except for the head. I helped her clear the pup and got her settled back in. She is fixated on the pup, she is cleaning it and I think trying to get it to respond. Should I remove the pup or will this slow down the delivery process? By taking it away am I causing undue hardship? I want to err on the side of caution, but also want to get her delivering pups again. The blood that came out after the pup was not red, but dark brown. I have no idea what time the pup may have been delivered. I am thinking a vet run is going to be in order, I just don't want to move her until I know she is done.

my female just had pups going on 2 weeks ago.. and she had her first one at like 9:25 am and didn't have the second one until about 10:45... she ended up having 9 all together but she delivered her last one at like 9pm that evening.... she also had a hard time getting the first one out... and sort of walked around her lot with it half out and then it finally dropped.. it had me scared also... but all is well except we lost two of the 9... when they were like 2 days old...

i'd put her on a blanket in vehicle and get her to the vet. the discharge may not be bloody but w/o knowing how long she has been like that would be my concern.

was the pup cold/stiff when you found it? body gets stiff after about 2 hrs and then relaxes again and by 8hr or so will get rigid again.

if the pups are not living, she could be setting up for infection and possibly worse. better to be safe than sorry.

hope everything works out.

No the puppy was very much pliable. My wife had been out about 15 minutes before and said that she has started to have it. I just assumed that in the 15 minutes that it took me to get home the pup would have been born. It was stuck head and front shoulders in. So it was only 15 minutes between when my wife saw the puppy coming and when I got to the kennel.

The pup probably died because the sack was still on its head and it drowned in fluid. Females often go a couple hours between pups. I would remove the pup. Keep an eye on her. If she has another that appears to have drowned in fluid hold it by its back legs with its head hanging down and swing it a few times. This will cause fluid to drain from its nose and mouth and it may start breathing and be ok. it sounds harsh but I seen my father save some like that and I have revived some like that also.

Thanks Travis. I have already removed the pup, this pup was abnormally large, and I could not feel another anywhere from her ribs back to the birth canal. I think she is done.

My female had 7 pups last Sunday when I checked her at 1am she still only had 7. Next day done chores and went to unload a load of hay and came back around 10am and there was 12 pups. Leave her alone, give her some time but be watchful , try being calm and quit when checking. If all else "take her to the Vet" and have her looked at!!!!!

She passed her placenta here about an hour ago. Looks like just the single puppy. It was HUGE. Much larger than it probably should have been. She is eating, and acting as if nothing happened. Thanks everyone.
