A pair of brothers from fines creek in hardwood county n.c. took me under their wings and got me started hunting with hounds. Dean Surrett and his brother Phillip. Dean has been dead now for 9 years and i miss him everyday. I still run into Phillip from time to time during bear season.

I have 3 men that took me under their wing. Gary Billingsley, Kevin Wilson both from here in Mississippi. And Grady Williford form Illinois. I miss those nights in the woods with them and to my knowledge not one of them coon hunt anymore.

my popaw Alfred Rectenwald got me into running and chasing rabbit beagles at a early age probably around 7 years old along with my dad , and cousin . they had a buddy that ran beagles with them that also coon hunted , we would spend a weekend at his house running beagles during the day and coon hunting at night . my dad and popaw co-ownd a walker hound named willie that they used to hunt when I was little . But outside that i'd have to say my uncle Olan "machette " toppings was the one who really got me into coon hunting and owning my own dogs when I was around 14 I guess .I've deer hunted , squirrel hunted , turkey hunted far back as I can remember , with family , and my popaws . I've been blessed with a outdoors type family and its gave me a lot of memories !

Where the redfern grows. I got a dog from a man down the road that didnt hunt but like to keep hounds. Me and a friend coonhunted together for three years before we ever met another coon hunter. We hunted almost every night for the first year before we ever treed a coon.

My uncle got me into hunting at a very young age, but it was a little crossed up cur that I kept as a yard dog that really got me interested in hunting. We had hounds, but the cur would get treed while everybody was asleep,as he ran loose. I'd get up and hear him in the mornings before school. He would tree anything , coon, possum, squirrel , house cat. I started taking him in the woods around around my house on nights my uncle didn't go. I was only 12, but I hunted that dog 3 or 4 nights a week up until I got my license at 16. I've quit hunting a few times due to work or lack of dog power, but I've always kept some kind of tree dog around to run loose in the yard. I guess it's something you never get out of your system lol
