Does using a drag with coon scent for pups really help never have tried it pls let me no what you think good or bad

Yes drags are the best way to start a pup .Use A FRESH KILLED COON WHEN DOING A DRAG.You don't need a cage coon.The truth be told more pups are messed up than trained when using cage coon or rolling cages..They are way over used and can even ruin some pups if not done right...Ive started way over a 100 pups not using a cage coon...(((I want my dogs to use and trust there nose 100% of the time)))...If a pup has to see a coon to show interest that's not good ...

Using a drag of a freshly killed racoon is a great way to get that pup headed in the rite direction,make sure you rub it on the tree where you hang it out of the reach of the pup, or your pup trainer, don't let them jump up and grab the racoon out of the tree, it will get them to jumpimg at the tree.
A drag will teach them to "locate" where the racoon is, by scent, it will get them using their nose,not sight....
Sometimes when you get them using their natural senses, all kinds of good things start bubbling out of that pup......
I have gotten young dogs in the past that people have given up on, and with just a couple little tricks, a drag being 1 of them, got the young dog that has been passed on getten better, and pretty soon, the previous owner saying, what did you do to make that pup tree???

Anything done right is good ... the thing to remember is that you can't fool a dog's nose ... and to make your training represent your hunting.

Dog's can smell death .. simple as that , fresh hides are ok .. but take the time to skin and clean the hide a little ... using the carcass is just being lazy.

Live coon in a rope bag or cage are better ... good scent like Grawe's is good , but the Grawe's scent is hard to use for me .

Lay drags away from your house like you are going hunting .. do them at night as soon as possible ... don't let the pup see the hide much and then not at all ...

At the house , daylight , by sight , drug like a dead body , etc ... that stuff don't help a pup and don't fool their nose ...

It's ok if a pup has a little trouble with some of this .. they all do , but the quicker you get a pup doing it away from the house and at night .. and cast him into the woods to find a drag ... the faster that pup will LEARN something ..

If a pup don't wanna do it ... it just means he aint ready and you better show patience and listen to him ... don't force it or find a way to get him barking just because you are dying for him to ... it's gotta come natural.

and a huge thing ... stay back and let a pup find the tree and locate /settle on his own before going in ... you may lay a dozen drags he won't locate on before he does ... that's ok , but running in to tease him with a hide to bark will set him back farther than just leaving it be til' next time.

A few things about drags. You dont want to over do them. I try letting the pup find the dead coon while on a walk in the woods. I Do that about once a month ( starting at 6-8 months old) that gives the pup time to mature between each time..Once they show interest lay your drag . Make it simple to start out. You want to rub the coon really good on one side up high as you can reach . Place the coon in a large plastic bag and take it way. Place it where the pup cant find it . Like in the cab of your truck...Don't let the coon touch the ground after placing the scent up the tree ...The next drag can get longer. Your not trying to fool the pup just make it easy for them to tree. Once a pup can tree a drag.(( You should only do it 2-3 times at the most))...The more you do drags will only cause problems with most dogs. Like them running your track...(One thing) most dogs will never open on a drag so don't worry about that...This works pretty good I even know guys that use hotdogs and get there dogs treeing them. The only problem Ive seen when using (hotdogs) they seam to be really close hunters and you can have a real hard time getting them to hunt deep....

Most all dogs will open on a drag if you keep them leashed and encourage them until they bark and make them work for it , barking as they go ... do this all the way on a couple to get them barking and they will sort out your scent from coon scent with you walking them ....

I don't lay a track on the ground for a pup to follow the first time it smells coon scent.I like to put a fresh road kill in a tree on a rope but I try to hide the silhouette of the coon in a fork.I prefer to hang this coon several hours before taking the pup back to the general area, sometimes the coon will set overnight until around dawn.I like to expose a pup to coon scent in this manner and it will show me as to how much natural ability the pup was born with.Not many pups will find a coon in this manner the first time and then I may lay a drag or 2 but the ...SPECIALS ONES WILL BLOOM EARLY...Some bloodlines will use ther nose and some use there nose and brains...I like to think that a coon dog needs to be looking for game in a tree first then follow a trackif that is what it has to work with....I NEVER SHOW A PUP A LIVE COON...

You can use any scent to train a dog. The question is does the scent smell like a real coon????????????
