I hunted with one the other night that Larry owns. NITECH PR Wilcox' Thunder Gunsmoke. I think Larry said he is 16 months old. Nite Champion, 1 win towards Grand and qualified for the World. He has a litter mate that is a Nite Champ as well.
Big, houndy, good-looking red and white dog. Loud mouth, real nice tree dog. We just made 2 trees with him as Larry said he wasn't acting right (couldn't prove it to me I thought he acted fine but I don't know the dog). Treed on the edge of a pond on a big wooly-booger tree we didn't see, second tree he popped a layup we did see and did a fine job.
This is just one pup though on one night. I will say I liked him. Thing that impressed me most is he has sense. When you get him out of the truck he acts good. I don't know if I'm explaining myself right or not but you know how some pups will act stupid when they get out of the box? Smoke doesn't, he has sense. Cut him loose (both drops were solo) and he hunted from that very spot, looking for something. He's not afraid of the dark. First track was a little longer but both times he had to go hunting to find a track.
Like I said, I liked him. Of course then Larry got old Gun out and I really liked him. Did a great job during three drops! He ran three totally different types of tracks in three different types of terrain (one around a big swamp which he had to grub out) and looked good.
You have to remember most of Gun's pups are fairly young as well. The majority of the litters out of him were whelped after January 2012 (including Smoke). Many, many litters are under a year.
This was the first time I had ever met or hunted with Larry but I had a great time and a great hunt.
