It gets the genes that dictate probably 80/90 % of every thing it does in life. Outside factors do make lots of difference.

Correct, Bill. Chewing, face barking, tree jumping and nearly every other behavior are genetic.

I don't totally agree. I have seen it both ways a young dog do all this and the parents not do it also seen one of the parents do it and not the dog. now like a tight mouth dog I seen the parents totally open on track

Re: what does a pup get from their parents

MYERS you got it .in the last 50 yeaes i have started over 500 pup no name pup and big name pups a pup mite have more track or tree power from the genes but the rest is up to you .face barking is no more then a more dominate pup in the litter . jumping and chewing is just a pup over excite if you let your kids talk back to you . it wont take long they will be yelling at you .most people starting a pup are just happy they are doing some thing and miss these signes as pups .later on well it in the genes . nip in the butt from day one

folks you have dominant and recessive traits in both parents that is why you can breed two silent dogs and get a completly open pup both parents recessive gene for open mouth were the one the pup ended up with. genetics determine almost all the pup will be . i have bred and linebred and also outcrossed at times for 40 years that is why when you linebreed you need to know recessive as well as dominate traits when you outcross it is just like playing roulette you dont know how they are going to end up

But the gene could have come from grandparents or aunts or uncles. Absent in the parents doesn't mean absent in the genes.
