The food is awesome in that area but I would second the idea about getting just a bit farther north. However, I would only go as far north as the central portion of the state. There is a bunch of forest service land and a few WMA's but those can onle be used during competition hunts (with a permit) or they have a kill season. Also plenty of private land but it can be accessed normally by talking to the owners. I have a deer lease in the north-central portion of the state that has a huge hardwood swamp that is never and I do mean never coonhunted. It's just a bit of a drive for me to go there at night and the other members don't coonhunt. However, they don't object to anyone else doing so.
Don't believe for a second all the BS about gators killing a dog every turnout. They can be a threat but you don't have to hunt those spots. Cars kill way more dogs across the country. We do have a bunch of snakes but a snake killing a dog isn't common either. I know guys that used to average having a dog bitten about once every couple of weeks or so. But, they hunted rice fields where there were lots of them. The downside??? It gets pretty hot in the summer. Skeeters are intense. I guess it's all what you get used to though.
