Any help with this is appreciated
i'd much rather see a young dog leave a tree and go run a different coon then go backwards on the track. thats usually a sign the dog was started too young or the lack of brains bred into it. but at a yr old it aint gonna have the brains, nose or experiance to have learned any real track sense.
youngs dogs are usually more accurate because they have to know they have the coon for them to tree, they wont guess.
unless someone has tried to teach them how to tree insted of just teaching them what to tree.(tree happy)....
with your dog you will have a much more accurate dog if you let him come into staying because he has learned enough track sense to know he has it. as you hunt him more and with some age he will start staying on more and more of the trees he commits to.
the back tracking is something that i would be more concerned with. its a bad habit to try and fix. if its bred in you wont fix it, if it is a training error its a maybe fix if he gets smarter with age and hunting and if the dog has enough natural abilty and brains to figure it out with the learning of track sense..
