HTX Questions????

Twin Rivers CHA had it's first HTX last night. Thanks to all who came & supported. We hunted 11 dogs & had 3 passes.
We had a couple of situation where judges were unsure on how to handle the situation.
1. Dog is cut & doesn't make a sound for around 20 minutes. Next thing you know a local farmer pulls up with the dog in his truck. He had picked her up crossing a farm road about 400 yds through the woods. Question is...How do you handle the time used? There is no accurate way to tell how long she was hunting & how long she was riding. Is it just a bad break?
2. Dog has treed a slick tree then a 2nd & judge has seen coon. The dog is cast for a 3rd time & strikes a track before time runs out. Do you have to let the dog finish that track or can you pull the dog out? If the dog does tree before you get to it, do you score that tree? My assumption would be not scoring after time is up as if you were in a night hunt.

Thank you for any input.

Sounds like you had a great turn out for your Hunt Test! And from the results it certainly looks like it was an honest one. I hope everyone enjoyed it.

Question 1 is a tough one. In a nite hunt where you are competing against other dogs in the cast, or in the case of a one dog cast, other casts, it would not be fair to assume or guess at actual time hunted and it would simply be a bad break. In a hunt test where dogs are being judged against a standard only, I would think it would be fair for the handler and inspector to come to an agreement on a fair guess of actual hunting time used and take that into consideration. If in the example above the dog was returned 20 minutes after it was cast I would think I might charge the dog with 10 minutes hunting time? I don't know...something like that. Try to be honest and give the dog the benefit of the doubt and recast.

In question 2, if the dog only has one fault and then satisfies all the requirements of a pass on the second track, I would pick the dog up at the one hour mark (even if it's trailing) and consider it a pass. If the dog were to tree after the hour and before he was handled the tree is not scored.

1. I would think that it is bad luck but he still had 40 minutes of hunt time left.

2. If the dog is struck in before the time is up an 15 minute extension is allowed to finish the track and if dog is still tracking at that point time is up.

I may be wrong but if I remember correctly that should be pretty close.

Thank you for the input & answers. Seems like we handled the situations appropriately. Just wanted have some reassurance for next time. We had a great turn out & everyone seemed eager to return & try again. It was fun to meet some new people & watch some different dogs work.
Todd, you're right about the judging & results being honest. As much as we want to see dogs make this accomplishment, the fact that people go about in an honest way is very important to our club.

Thanks again

My advice for what it is worth, if the dog is passing at the end of the hour quit and pick the dog up. You have already passed and there is no more to gain. The extra 15 min. is allowed if the dog hasn't treed a coon yet and doesn't have 2 faults.

I would say for question 2 pick up dog at end of hour and it gets a PASS for the test.

Rule Says:
"If the dog is trailing as time runs out, hunting time MAY be extended for an additional 15 minutes IF the dog has not completed the requirements for a pass during the hour."

Since dog had requirements for a PASS you would not need to extend time.

Thanks for all of the info.

We held another HTX on Saturday night. We hunted 12 dogs & had 7 passes. Coons were moving good. Thanks to all who participated.
