I will disagree on who was the best dog trader, O.L. Beckham from Missouri was the best known dog dog trader back in the day. He wrote stories for Full Cry that was featured in the magazines for years and years.
My grandfather loved to trade dogs. I was raised up riding in the back of his 53 Chevy going to a place called "Briscos" to trade dogs. Even if grandpa traded for a good dog, it was up for trade the next month. When I got old enough, grandpa got hold of a retired field trial mix breed named Nig that treed coon and squirrel. I bought Nig from grandpa and then, we had a dog that would tree game for us.
There are not too many dog traders these days. I personally consider myself a dog breeder and I have had some success in that role. There is one guy that calls me "dog trader" to get under my skin but it doesn't work. I either buy or sell dogs occasionally but most of my dogs come from dogs I have bred over the years. I will say I have a couple of "old time" buddies that I swap dogs with just for old times sake. They are in their 70s, they won't be swapping much longer, but it reminds me of the days of my youth. I don't expect much in a dog swap and I ain't trading much. The fact is that me and one of them are going to swap dogs tomorrow. I figure I might get something young that just needs a chance. We are swapping short eared, bob tailed dogs LOL
