Have you ever heard this claim? LOL!!

I took my two Nighthawk Pups out last night along with a local teenager who is loving the hobby of coon hunting one last time before kill season was over. We pull up into the gamelands and there is a truck already parked with two guys standing on the oppsite side of it. Being a friendly guy I shout out you guys coon hunting if so I will move up the road to the other end. They say yeah we are. So I ask what kind of hounds are you running I have to B&T pups in the truck. They reply we don't have dogs, we call them in. So thinking I originally misheard them, I reply are you are hunting fox and coyotes. No, we are hunting coon they replied. I never heard of calling coons, except squalling to get them to look after the dogs treed them. So they quickly put their guns in the truck so I couldn't recognize the caliber and drove off. I looked at the kid and said, "Can you say poachers?" Of course I didn't have the 1-800 number in my cell for DNR, but I will.

Calling coons is perfectly legal in PA....why would you call them poachers just because you have never heard of calling coon???? This time of year, with breeding season, calling coon can be VERY effective and very exciting....

A lot of people forget that a coon is a predator. They will come to the sound of a wounded animal in hope of a easy meal. Same as a coyote. I watch a video once of two coons killing a deer fawn and eating it.

Ok, I am big enough to except the fact I might have jumped the gun. My question is why were they so anxious and beat feet out of there then ? We even offered to go to the other end to stay out of their way. Most hunters I have met would be quick to explain this skillful art, but I just got a bad vibe off these guys. Now that I look back on it I think it was their demeanor and not so much their explanation. Thanks for all the responses about calling coons being legitimate.

So an electronic call, or a mouth squaller? Now I am intrigued. I prefer listening to hounds, but each their own. In the video they did it in the daytime, is there a preference?

Think about this.I f you had just got ready to start predator callin and two guys show up to drop dogs in same woods a bit further down wouldnt you maybe figure lets try somewhere else? Also if me I would worry once I started callin the pups may hear even from a distance and come in and worry I mite shoot someones pup when I saw eyes. OR maybe you were right. I have never tried callin coon in looks fun!

I think blasting coons with a shotgun was questionable myself, but I would be interested to try calling just to see if I could get their attention. But I don't shoot many anyways. I just like to here the dog.

I agree with you critter, they were just killing to be killing. I think it would be ok if they were selling hides or eating the coons but just to call them and shoot them like that was kinda disgusting. The guy that kept jumping up and dancing around kinda made me sick. On another note what do you think of this for starting pups, you could call them up and turn pups out on them in the daytime.

They coulda been upto no good....

Or they arent real friendly...was in a hurry for whatever reason...had a bad hunt due to "dang hound hunters" and just wanted to leave as soon as they saw you...

Maybe startled to see anyone back there at nite..

No telling....but coon calling is real...lots of ways to do it...day time..nite time...mouth calls..electronic calls...dying critter sounds or coon sounds...

I prefer running my dog too...but ive called fox...its a rush...calling in a jacked off 20# coon lookin for a fight would be too i bet...

They say sometimes they come in looking to kill....others they climb a tree and sit up it...

Using a shotgun on a coon that you plan to sell to the fur trade is a no-no...coon are marketed leather side out....holes are deductions...shotgun blasts often times completely ruin the pelt....

Killing just to.kill????

I betcha there are a ton of guys on here that dont skin coon.....and there are guys on here that will openly admit they kill every coon their dog trees and they hunt all year round and they dont care about seasons...

I find dog chewed wasted coon laying in the woods to rot....

Callin coon is alot of fun, doesn't always work good.I doubt anyone would kill just to kill with coon averageing $20.00.I get most all my coon with hounds but I like to call once in a while.

He uses a combo of electronic and a mouth call at night. He also uses hounds so he enjoys it all
