It is a tearing of the ligaments in the knee. Making the patella float instead of staying fixed in place. Common with dogs that do a lot of running and jumping. There is a surgery that can be done. It has a 6mo recovery time. With lots of confinement. It is worth the surgery, but can be torn again, though it is uncommon. A tie is placed in the ligament and under the patella. Which keeps is in place. Where I work we probably do 10 of these surgeries a week. Usually costs anywhere from $700-$1500.

My wife works at an orthopedic vet, she said it takes surgery to fix and they do it every day with great success.. Have to keep dog inactive for 6 weeks.. Costs around $1500

If this is the knee cap on a rear leg I've heard it can be cut free on the "good " side so the cap can float without pulling to one side or the other . No expert just something I've heard .

Thanks guys, hope things work out he isn't a world shaker but he sure gives me a lot of pleasure and satisfaction. My vet told me a lot about the condition but I was interested in other people's experiences especially with dogs that operate at the level a coondog has to. This is a go yonder get it done wherever he has to go to find it kind of dog that I really like. So I guess I'm going to pursue it (could spend a lot of money trying to find another that I liked this much)maybe in a few months I can have a success story to tell. I know a couple of more scars wont look out of place he,s kind of a high mileage model.
