Cataracts In Hounds

My Seven year old male hound has Cataracts in both eyes. Would like to know a good vet in North Carolina that is west of Asheville or one that is in northern part of Georgia. My male hound is a son of Cowee Creek Clint and loves too hunt. Have a quote from one vet and it was 2400.00 for the firsteye and 1800.00 for the second one. Thats a little high for me. I am not rollin in money. I am open to any info you all have. Thanks for your time Sam Kelly & Cowee Creek Jim

Cataracts in Hounds

You might want to contact your state veterinary school university teaching hospital to see how much they would charge. Also, they may know of a canine veterinary 'Trial' (like they do in human medicine) that you might be able to participate in. Those Trials sometimes have significantly reduced fees, as they are meant for research & development of new treatments, new surgeries, new meds, etc.

Seems like most canine veterinary surgery is ridiculously expensive nowadays. This is in part due to the fact that many dog owners now have Pet Insurance for their animals.

In 2004, my local vet was doing dog dental cleaning for less than $80.00 Last year, I took a dog in to the vet to see about cleaning her teeth, & the quote I received was, "Anywhere from $400.00 to $800.00, but we won't know until we get in there !"

That's more than it would cost to clean MY teeth...

Good luck with your dog; hope you find someone who will do it for a reasonable fee.
