Me and a buddy are at a slight disagreement.....

I have a male that is gunna be 2 in late April.....he is about as nice of a youngun as one can want...cut the leash and you arent likely to see him again till he is on a tree...most times he will have the meat..if not its a legitimate den...rarely pulls up slick...

Been in 2 hunts and has a 3rd place win...big "hurdle" was getting him used to hunting with a cast...hes never been with strange dogs and i have since started hunting with his brother and 2nd cast he won no trouble...

Will split tree and will hold the pressure...last hunt a dog treed..he kept on his track..scored tree..cut that dog loose...mine treed and then the other 3 treed together...he did a nice job and had the coon...


I didnt have him cut....my reasoning is my life is very uncertain at this point...my buddy lets me keep him on his farm...i feed him daily..but 6 months a year i.work out of state...my buddy takes care of him for me...

I could have to sell him at any moment....i just dont know where life is going to take me..... i hope it takes me to good coon huntin where i can keep my dog...but could be the complete opposite and i will have to.sell him...

He is direct out of Trackman and his dam is a grand nite out of Dizzy...

I think he will be worth more and easier to sell being intact....


My buddy says i need to grand him ASAP because he will realize he is a male and start ruining hunts and not performing etc....he has always fixed his dogs early on....

He says anyone buying a dog like mine wants to competition hunt and win..not breed him and dont care and dont want him intact...


I think him being intact opens more doors....


Right now, with no major faults, being a super natural and easy starting dog, id like to grand him and stud him and see what he reproduces...i dont have a kennel or a name for myself or dogs...but maybe free or 50-100$ breedings for a while would get pups on the ground and see what he reproduces...


What are y'alls thoughts??? I know its my dog and my crazy life....my buddy makes it out like any day now he might short circuit because he is intact....i love coon hunting and competition hunting...if my dog becomes a problem i wont be happy.....just dont know what to think or do.....right now i am completely happy with my dog...hope i can keep him...but just dont know..

Collect Him then get him Cut !! .. If you want to sell him do so including 4 straws or so, keep some straws for yourself ..

Heck if he does turn Out Great nothing Lost eather way !! Plus the straws you kept could be worth alot more then the Dog did ....

So till he breeds he shouldn't ever have an issue??


Right now, he pees on stuff..other than that no sniffing etc etc....


I know the world dont need another stud....and not trying to be the next big name.....but, if i sell him the next guy may want to breed him....and after i grand him out and am hopefully.living a stable life, i wouldnt.mind seeing what he reproduces...


Never thought of collecting him......will have to look into the cost....and storage...could be a win/win....

Ive worked with a few dogs.....i sure wish they all started as easy and as natural as he did....im talking i showed him a caged coon..a few nites later i took him on a walk in the dark just to do it...sure.enough he treed his first.coon....dont get any easier than that....

Your cutting yourself short my getting him snipped, keep everything there. Alot of people wouldnt pay as much or want to buy a snipped dog. I'm sure some people may disagree but if you get him cut gonna take that testosterone away and could affect his drive

It might not but it settles alot of dogs down once u do that

Cut him! I never hunted with a neutered dog until a friend gave me a neutered Walker dog. He is so laid back and easy going. Never a butt sniff or trying to hump a female. Quiet it the house, just a dream to own. I have decided to get my male English neutered too. I have no plans to breed him and you can now show a neutered dog on the bench. You can do all the events at the show and Hunts, with out male testosterone (sp) getting in the way, with the dogs at least.

GOOD THOUGHT ABOUT COLLECTING HIM. GET HIM COLLECTED THEN IF YOU WANT TO SEE WHAT HE REPRODUCES, HAVE THE FEMALE A.I. THAT WAY YOU'LL PROBABLY GET AWAY FROM THE SNIFFING. I'M NOT A FAN OF CUTTING THE MALES.

I wish cutten em was more popular.
Half the dogs that are bred shouldnt be.
Therd be less gowly dogs around the hunts.

You would be crazy to get him cut now. I have a 2 yr old I bred to a female and you would never think he's been around a female. Let the dog speak for himself! If you do get him cut you won't get as much money for him, he will become somewhat lazy, and just what if he does become the next big thing?! If you do breed him and he becomes a trouble maker (which I doubt) then have him collected and cut. Jmo

The vast majority of males are not breeding stock. And for those males, I always recommend neutering to help them have the easiest, healthiest, longest, most stress-free, and productive life. Making that cut about the time I see ’em lift their leg the fifth time seems to work real well for me and has for about 25 years. Always seems like the beginning of leg lifting is a good sign and signal that it’s time to end lots of potential problems and concerns with one itty-bitty little operation. Excessively marking territory is certainly just one of the many benefits.

If you waited a year or two longer than that to take care of castration or if you wish to keep your male intact but don’t want him wasting your time and his by excessively marking everything in sight, then get out your E-collar, properly prepare your dog before you do

My buddies dog is a fully littermate brother to mine...they eat the same feed...my buddies actually eats less....he gotta be at or.close to 100lbs of fatness....his.last male was the same....they hunt and do well....but the size of them is incredible....and their weight shortens their life span...or hunting life atleast...


I am a believer that.most dogs should never be bred.....mine probably too....but when it comes to faults, he hasnt shown one yet....he isnt a fan of the truck.....but bailing from a truck going down the driveway as.a.pup did that...he still loads to hunt...just isnt a huge fan yet...his natural ability and super easy natural starting was amazing......if all dogs started like he did id be a happy hunter...reality is that doesnt happen as often as it should..because of.poor breeding....

not every male is a stud. a few of the better hounds i have seen were cut. they don't get fat and lazy and they don't loose there drive to hunt.

Amazingcur, i agree...most dogs arent worth feeding let alone breeding....

But ive never seen a male dog that was cut stay small and fit....

My friends have a rescued mutt...it had worms and stuff and was hardly fed..vet thinks it stunted his growth....he started marking their house...they got him cut....i didnt see it for around 2 months....i betcha it put on 15lbs easy...same food etc....he has calmed down 10 fold...quit marking...put on a ton of weight for his size....

House dogs is one thing...i rather have a house dog calm, never lift its leg etc...

But i dont like a fat or a skinny hound..

Both my buddies arent lazy...they will hunt all nite....they dont have a fire under them...but they still hunt...slower for sure..


Think for now i will let him keep his stuff....i think its the best option for the time being....if it becomes an issue i will do something about it...right now i dont forsee a problem....i cut that lead and that dog is goin to get me a coon...

I've got a female gonna be 11 in July. I never spayed her. Haven't raised a pup. No I wouldn't cut him. That's just me though.

in my opinion you want a stud dog that has only one thing on his mind when hunting him, and that is getting treed,even hunting him with a female thats in heat.you want a stud dog that has a stronger desire to tree coons then smelling other dogs.

If I have a male or female that I have no desire to ever breed I have them fixed. It works great, the dogs hunt fine and eat a little less.

A dog like you are describing I would not cut. If he is stud dog material I would grand him out and sell him to someone esle and let them hassle with breeders.

AN OLD HUNTER TOLD ME ONCE, WHATEVER YOUR DOG IS DOING, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, CHANGE IT. I HAD A DOG I COULDN'T CATCH AT THE TREE UNLESS YOU SHOT THE COON OUT TO HIM. NOW SUMMERTIME, DEN TREES AND SLICKS, WERE A PROBLEM. I GOT A BOOK AND LEARNED HOW TO ACCUSTOM MY DOG AND WENT TO WORK. AFTER AWHILE, ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS SAY COME HERE. NO PROBLEM. Thanx guys!! I'm not claiming to have the next best thing in the stud dog world.....i am a realist...i have a youngun that i like enough to feed....and was the most natural easiest starting dog ive ever worked with...

His littermate brother been in a lot more hunts and needs 2 wins to be grand...2 out of 6 of our litter seem to be coon dogs..hope the others are too!

In all honesty i know i dont have the name or means to promote a dog...the phone calls i got about selling pups was ridiculous.....more work and time than i thought itd ever be!

selling him after i title him may be best...maybe breed him to a female i like a lot for pick of the litter or something before selling him....we'll see where the road leads me....and him....

Im going to keep on him and be at the hunts every weekend....if all goes right in my life i leave for work in April or May...i wanna have his nite champion title before then for sure...

I've seen other male dogs that was not cut try to ride cut male dog more than one time. Just wondering if any body else has seen this. but have to say there all hunt once u cut them.

I had a little male- he was roughly 45 lbs in hunting shape, intact.. At age 2 I had him cut because he was annoying the heck out of me around females and I realized I had no interest in breeding him..

He stayed 45lbs and kept his shape.. His daddy was one of those dogs who held muscle tone no matter how much or how little you hunted him.. He was the same.. Being cut didn't change it at all...

All fixing him did was make him more enjoyable to hunt..

Your dog doesn't sound bad enough to cut at this point.. I have one intact male running around and when he thinks he is going to stop and pee on everything he gets toned.. He quit stopping as often

I have 4 Cut Males they all are in Top Notch condition !! 2 were cut for Getting on my Nerves !! and I had no intention on breeding them .. The Other 2 have been Collected and Stored then Cut. Pure Enjoyment with them !!!!!!
