The cost of coon hunting today

How much does it cost to coon hunt today? 30 years ago it didn't cost too much. I had a dog (that wasn't worth much), a 2 cell flashlight, single shot 22, worn out coat, rubber boots and buddy you were hunting! Today... I've got 3 dogs worth about 3,000 dollars, dimond deluxe dog box, new truck, shocking collar, 2 dog tracking unit, 2 21 volt lights, coon hunting briar proof clothes, hip boots, stop watch, a Garmin and an auto matic 22! Times have changed! Don't show this thread to your wife cause she might add up the price tag and be upset at you for spending so much. I miss the good old days!!! Ha ha

Dog food is the biggest expense in my opinion. At least with a light or a tracker it holds value and after a few years use if you decide to sell it you can.

Dog food is money that you never get back.

Any hobby is gonna be expensive, but just like any other hobby you can spend a butt load or buy what you can afford and still have an awesome time. I have a descent hound, nice box and a new alpha, but gas is still my biggest expense by far. I live in the city and have to drive at least 40 minutes for good and safe hunting. I don't keep a lot of dogs so feed don't bother me much but it is money we will not get back. I must say every penny I spend is worth it and then some. Good huntin guys.

a good bred pup 250-600 bucks

50 for my old single shot marlin .22

7 bucks for a box of 100 shells (usually only 2 boxes a year at the most)

a decent light 150 bucks

a carhart coat 100 bucks

blue jeans 20 bucks (i go through alot of pants lol)

jersey gloves (3 bucks a pair) usually go through 3 pairs a season

dont own a tracker

dont own a shocker.

i got plenty of huntin were i live so i walk every were when i hunt and when i do go other places to hunt with buddys i got a home made dog box that i got the wood from were i work along with the screws so i got a free dog box also.

i just got an old rusted up 1978 dog power wagon 250 that i paid 600 bucks for and its my every day driver also

boots (i were my work boots huntin also) 150 bucks

50 lb bag of dog feed 30 bucks.

i usually keep 2 hounds at a time. an older dog and a younger dog so i go through 50 lb of feed o every 6 days so say a bag every week cost 1500 bucks a year so dog feed cost me the most

so im lookin at about 2500 a year just to coonhunt. well a dog lives from 7-15 years without havin a accident were they get killed a light last 3-5 years boots last about a year and i go through about 5 pairs of huntin jeans a year and ive had the same coat for 10 years. so yea its expensive but its well worth it because usually 100 hides a year brings close to 600-1200 bucks depending on the price so its not a total loss of money

I'm just saying no one has to have a $600 tracker, $500 shocker, $500 light, $750 dog box, $2500 dog, $135 boots, $100 coat. I'm not saying I don't have nice things and I have almost everything I listed but there was a time I hunted without trackers, shockers, fancy dog boxes, lights etc. My first coon boots were a pair of knee high rubber boots, first coat was just my school coat, first light was a black mag lite, first dog box was a pair of 50 gallon drums strapped together, first dog was a free pup. I had better hounds then than I do now and I had a lot less nice fancy things, however, I was a lot happier whooping those guys at hunts with my po dunk coondog and things than I am to do it today. Coonhunting is as expensive as you deem it necessary. Ah well what do I know only been hunting coons with hounds for 21 years I guess y'all are right you gotta be rich to coonhunt. That's probably why most coonhunters I know roll into a coonhunt in a $2000 truck with a couple hundred dollar dog or someone elses cull and win most of the local hunts.

Ditto. That's the sole reason we can't get out as much as I'd like.

Its pretty cheap compared to other hobbies. Truck pulls, racing, motorcycles, flying, tractor restoration.

About the only thing less expensive is fishing. And that's only if you dont buy a $40,000 bass boat and $60,000 truck to pull it around.

Yes all hobbies cost some money, but it gets you outside in Mother Nature, enjoying that. The cheapest hobby I've ever taken up is Gold Prospecting,, You don't have to buy feed for it ,no meds, and it won't rust ,,,lol,, I've made few $$$$ of it,but I've made even more friends,,,Later guys !
