Advice for new coonhunter

just started hunting this year. i have a yr old walker who is very aggressive with a caged coon, will pick up track and tree when i turn it loose. when i get him in the woods he opens and tracks all night but wont look up. hunt him with an older dog but does his own thing even when older dog trees. appreciate any advice.

Patience, patience, patience. Keep doing what you're doing. When you are hunting him with another dog and it trees MAKE SURE YOU TIE HIM UP AT THE TREE!!!! At his age he is still figuring out what the game is all about. One of these days when you are hunting him by himself he will surprise you and tree. Lots of praise and reward him. DO NOT let him get hurt by the coon. Bring that first one out dead....and praise him some more.

yes. he caught one on the ground and was fighting it when i got to him. it got loose and started up the tree, he went up after it and pulled it back down. the coon had got hold of him pretty good so i pulled him off and let the coon get up the tree then i shot it out to him.

There's alot of monkey see monkey do with young dogs . Like Randy said tie him at evey tree first thing and tie him back a far away enough so HE CAN SEE the other dogs treeing . Lot of times people tie them to close to that tree when they're young and it get's them barking at the other dog .

You dont want that pup to tree unless he knows a coon is up there. Tying him to the tree will just teach him to me too with another dog. Keep hunting him .

I look at it like this. Treeing is just an extension of the track not being able to be followed any longer because the track went up the tree. When the pup figures out that track went up that tree and he can no longer follow it, treeing instinct should kick in. Some pups do it quickly, some pups take a little longer. I believe the pups that take a little longer may be a little bit more accurate in the long run. I also like to see the pup figure it out by hisself and not copy off others dogs. All this is just my opinion and I am sure others will feel different. One other thing, never tie that pup to a tree just because another dog is treeing. You do not want that pup at that tree unless you know there is a coon in that tree. If you do, you are just teaching him to tree because another dog is treeing. For the most part, I don't worry about the pup until I see or hear it treeing a little, then I tie them. If they are treeing a little on the tree, they know where the track went and now it's time to stay. JMO

I have not hunted with the dog so I'm not qualified to say when to cull him!!!!! That is up to the owner!!! BUT; i have had years of experience, and AM qualified to say that all young dogs do not make it.== never have and never will== regardless of what any one says.

He may be thinking about that one he caught on the ground, might not have much interest in treeing if he thinks there are coon around that could also be caught on the ground... Why would he stay and tree if that keeps him from finding one that he can catch...?
It will make him cover for a while, but I would just shoot coon out to the dog that stays treed, the young one will start to think he wants to be where the action is. If you don't shoot many then praise the dog that stays treed as much as you can. Hoot and holler and have a grand old time at that tree. I bet this dog knows the coon is there, just doesn't understand yet the he should be too.

id be able to explain this better if we were face to face but here it goes.. you can hunt him with another dog the best of the best is what you want to hunt him with doesnt matter if its a fast dog or slow as long as its good and has no faults that pup will pick up when that old dog trees and that pup aint with him at the tree give it alittle bit he may be slower on the track then the older dog if you choose to go that route when he gets to the tree look at that dog learn to read that dog does he smell up the tree or look up with his eyes? but once he gets to that tree leash him up some young dogs want stay treed to long because they are adhd at a young age and their mind wonders tie him back and dont love up on him at all go over there to the old dog and love on him like its his last day on earth make that pup jealous make him want to get in on the action let him start raisen heck wanting your attention still no love pop the coon out to the old dog and let that pup want that coon so bad he trys to break his neck leashed up but do not give him that coon after a few of that he should start treeing with the old dog when he trees with the old dog stop and single him out and give caged coons a few menutes head starts like one 15 men next 30 men etc when he gets to were he can tree that coon with a hour head start and dont let him see you turn the coon aloose eather he is ready to start being dumped on wild coons.

here is some more tricks he doesnt want that coon bad enough from what im hearen take you a caged coon take it to his kennel, chain where ever you have him and let him bark at that coon for about 3 menutes then take the coon away go off to where he cant see you put the coon in a bucket that has a hole in it just big enough he can stick his nose in pull that bucket with the coon in it up a tree about 4 or 5 feet go back and get the dog and turn him aloose from his chain, kennel he will go looken for the coon because he wants it you got his mind on that coon bad well watch him see how he acts when he gets to that bucket does he smell up in the air and get on the wood or just look up? if he looks up you have gohimusing his eyes it can be fixed but im here to tell you it is a pain in the butt but can be done but when he gets to that bucket he will more then likely stick his nose in that hole in the bucket and when he does boy does he have a surprise comeing but geuss what he cant see the coon he can only smell it so he is usen his nose he gets bit /scratched on the nose and i bet he goes ape **** crazy and retard strong on that tree its worked for me for dogs that liked to track more then tree doesnt mean they want make good dogs i like dogs like that they will usely be dern good track dogs and once they get to treeing they cant be beat they will have the meat 90 % of the time or it be a sure enough no bs den tree

i wouldnt be upset, let the pup progress and encourage him to do wat u want him 2.personally when i got in 2 coon hunting i made a mistake and bought a puppy for my first dog, then learned quick i should buy a nice finished hound and then got got another pup.anyways i would recommend to a person who just got into coon hunting,go hunting with sum men who have good hounds and learn how to work dogs, and then get a finished hound and hunt.u can always buy puppies later.i realize u might be past that point so just be patient and let him progress and correct him if he does wrong.hope it helps

I agree with this post one hundred percent!!! Patience is key some dogs pick up faster than others. I would try pulling the caged coon up a tree in the trap with a rope thrown over a strong branch
