Breeding a Female For The First Time

I've got a female that I'm going to breed soon. She's flagging and standing for any dog in sight right now on day 7. Planning on breeding her a single time on Day 9.
Do you think that's too early? I've contacted a vet about doing a smear test and I'm waiting for them to call me back with info.

Thanks,
Laura Bell

I have often heard it said that more times they miss because they were bred too late than because they were bred too early. If she is standing and flagging, it's go time.

I agree with Jim. The sperm will live in side the female for a period of time and be able to fertilize if you are a day or two early. I bred my female this spring and she had no interest in being bred and had a be gently held and wear a muzzle to get it done. We did is Sat nt and Sun morning of the 10th and 11th day and she had 7 healthy pups.

I prolly should have qualified my comment by saying I never actually have one live bred. We do all AI and Bitzel progesterone tests, then we haul her back and forth till he says it is the right time, that way it's all on him if she misses but we never had one miss.

if she is standing then let them try every other day after catching. if she is flagging/standing but fusses every time he tries to mount, then it may be an anatomical issue and time is of the essence and needs an AI. this was the case w/ Bonnie over 1.5 yr

Semen from a live cover breeding can last upto 5 days in a female to fertilize her when she is right which is why breeding at the start of ovulation will usually work. They say on chilled semen about 24hrs and frozen around 12 hours so they have to make sure they are hitting your female just right when using it. If your female is telling u she's ready then go with it I've missed more by being to late because I was just sure that I knew the exact day she was on

The dogs know more than we do. If she is flagging , get it done.

The stud is 3hrs away and I hate to leave her if I don't have to. She's letting female dogs mount her and let a neutered basset also, so I'm hoping for the best.
