How well do coon cuffs really work? Are they worth getting some to set around the farm for catching coons

I have used these traps for two years and well worth the money. I bait with marshmallows and sweet bait covered with tin foil and a shot of fish oil on top for potent scent. Work excellent and fast to set.

Do you treat them as other traps or can you just get them an then go set them?

I used them right out of the box. A couple of guys local got them powder coated in white for more eye appeal. I have some idiots close to where I trap and don't want them stolen. The only thing I learned is to make a catch pole and to take the coon away from trap before I dispatched if I planned on resetting. The scratch ring and coon scent was a help when resetting but the blood near the trap I have never had a recatch until after a couple good rains. Just some observation. Hope it's useful.

Look up Z traps they are exactly the same as a Grizz Getter or the duke copy of the Grizz but they come already powdercoated and have a two way trigger that fires when the coon pushes or pulls on it. They are a very good trap in that they allow you to focus specifically on catching coon and you will have very few off species catches. You will still catch a fair amount of feral cats with them but skunk catches are all but eliminated. Having said all of this though, my advice to you ( based on your other post about putting up skunks and being low on money) is buy some 1 1/2 coilspring traps. You can probablly buy two or three traps for the price of one coon cuff type trap. More traps equal more fur, period!

Thanks guys, this stuff helps, if be setting them around farms and the coon cuffs I'd feel would be better cause I'd be setting them around farms near corn piles and don't want to deal with accidentally catching many cats

Do not make the mistake if thinking coon cuffs are cat proof. You will catch a whole mess of cats with coon cuff type traps. About the only way to avoid catching cats is to bait your traos with something sweet. Marshmallows with coolaid powder or vanilla extract work real well but anything fishy or meaty smelling is gonna catch cats regardless of what kind of trap you use. The downside to the sweet smelling baits is they do not work near as well when it gets cold. Oily and fishy type baits and even baits with a good dose of skunk essence are what you need when the temperature drops.

Has anybody ever had problems with them freezing up cause its getting to where te high temps for the day are around 30 or less

That is why I cover them with tin foil to keep rain and snow out to keep them from freezing. After a reset I have had the muddy ones give me problems. As for cats I have never caught one. The Dukes D.P. the trigger has to be pulled up. Probably not impossible but I have not had it happen yet.
