Another Method Besides Harvesting Coon???

With all this talk about people shooting bunches of coons out, reckon there is something we as hunters that live where coons are thin could carry with us as a reward for our dog when he trees a coon instaed of knocking it out to them?
Ever watch those drug dogs work? When they make a legitimate hit the handler throws them a chew toy and they love it.
I know petting and praising is good but reckon that always satisfies the dog? If it does, then why ever shoot another coon out?
Any ideas on what would be good to reward a dog with in addition to praise?

I usually just pet mine up and tell them good job and the coon is dead. Mine would just as much be sent in to find another as have a taste. I have a 6 year old female here that has treed well over 600 coon lifetime for me and I'd say she's lucky if she has had at most a taste of 50 of the 600 coon she has treed. She's doing just fine!

The same here also. I have a four year old female that hasn't had a coon in her mouth in almost two years and still does just fine and the coon are not what I would call thin around here either. I just don't see the point in shooting them when she just keeps on treeing them anyway.

I know a guy that used to give his dogs cheese as a reward, and his dogs got way more excited over that cheese than mine ever did over a dead coon. He claimed that they got addicted to the cheese and would really work their tail off to get a piece of cheese. Good luck.

Had a walker gyp once saw her last dead coon at maybe 20 months. Hunted her about 7 years after that and she just got better and better. That's why we call them coon dogs.

That the way I feel too! I hunt 2 times a week all year long and tree 1or 2 coon just about every time. I won a lot of hunts and some times get beat at them. Not very often but some. My dogs get 2 or 3 shot out to them per year and the dogs haven't slowed up yet. Been doing it this way for 30 years and it works good. Don't hunt young dogs with a PUP TRAINER either. If its in the dog it WILL come out. If not get rid of it...that simple!

I have no way of knowing if I have to feed this dog coon or not to keep him going. Basically, when he started kicking it in high gear it was close to hunting season so he started getting a few. I am wanting to reward him without harvesting a coon, ever! I am not sitting here wondering if he is going to quit treeing because I have stopped knocking coons out to him. Not sure how you came to that conclusion but I would not be above owning a dog that had to have a few a year as long as he was a decent hound!
Is my dog one of those??? I do not know, have not had the opportunity to find out because he has had one out to him occasionally.

Yes, we all pet our dogs up when they do well, but my ??? is, have you completely, totally stopped harvesting coons to your dog? If you still shoot 2-3 out a year, you are not realizing the intent of my question.
I am talking to the people who no longer, nor have intentions of ever, shooting a coon out to their finished dog again!

Your post indicated you are still shooting coons if you are telling the dog it is dead. That is not remotely the intent of my post.

Here is another one missing the intent of the post!
I am talking about never, ever knocking another coon out period whether your dog chews on it or not!

By what you said with the K9 police dog example, they regularly use training exercises with "the real thing" and regularly use them in the force with "the real thing", so I'm not quite sure what you are getting at.

I believe most people including myself answered your question, and that was that many of us still shoot out coon to finished hounds, however, at a dramatically less rate than many others and it has had no adverse effects on our dogs.

If you re-read your post, it asks if shooting a coon out satisfies a dog enough, why ever shoot another out. Several have answered this by saying that they HAVE NOT completely stopped shooting coon out all together, but have done it a much lesser rate without adverse effects.

Maybe you should re word your question to, "why ever shoot a coon out to a hound?" And you may gt the answer you are looking for!

My thinking on this subject has changed through the years, the old school guys oftentimes still think they will ruin their dogs if they dont feed them coon and i used to think that way to. I have a couple dogs now that i believe would run and tree coon for the rest of their lives even if they never saw another coon. When i was a kid the neighbor had an old airdale dog that chased cars day in and day out for 10 years and i never saw him catch a single one.
What i do think you need to provide for the dog is a contrast that he can understand between a good job and a slick tree. Weather its a pat on the head as opposed to a kick in the rear or any other way that you can communicate to the dog that you are either happy with what he has done or dissapointed with what he has done. Remember to that all dogs need something different and the key to sucess is figureing out what works best for each dog.

To answer your question more specifically, No nothing means more to them than your praise.Mine will walk away from their feed dish for some pettin.

If you read the next to the last sentence I wrote, that is the exact question I asked pretty much word for word! My question asks nothing about cutting back on coons harvested (which is alot of the responses I got), but cutting out completely!
I did not ask if shooting the coon out was enough reward, I asked if praise was enough reward in the forums opinion. (meaning if it is, then why ever shoot out another coon)

oddly enough, it seems most folks will say their dog dont need a coon when we are hunting their spots, but they sure could use one when we hunt mine. lol

I have always felt that the .22 was a valuable training tool when used correctly. Many young hounds can be improved by knowing when to use it and when to leave it in the truck. imo
