It sucks but all that pup trainer is gonna do is teach the pup to tree with other dogs and when he does good and keeps looken good you will take him by hisself and be pissed because the pup looks like crap just be patience maybe turn some coons aloose give them about a 30 45 menute head start then turn pup aloose pop that coon out to him take him to some buckets turn him on the buckets its not easy buy if done right the reward is a lot runner then the year it took to get the pup to actually treeing coons consistent.

how you said they are too quick for the coon and they are beating him to the tree makes alot of sense because my oldst blue dog use to run coyotes and he pretty darn quick on feild trials but when he trees byhimself i know for sure hes got one up

be patient and keep em in the woods might take a little longer but if its in the dog it will come out both of my dogs got started without a older dog ,very independent but they hunt well with other dogs to good luck

a whole lot of people will disagree with me,
BUT - another dog does not TEACH a pup how to run track or how to tree. it only exposes the pup to coon and makes the dog want coon. once it wants a coon it will use its born with instincts to track scent and tree bark for whatever it wants bad enough. when a pup starts running track and treeing its not anything the other dog taught it. its just got to the point it wants the coon bad enough to do it.
you can expose a pup to coon and get it to want them without another dog and get the same result.
many people want a slow "puppy trainer" so the pup can learn to track. i want the best coondog i can put my pup with as the puppy trainer. the more coon the dog gets after and trees - the more coon the pup is exposed to. once a pup will try to get after a coon track on its own it should be hunted alone. if you wait for the pup to tree first or split tree or tree with the other dog you have already left the pup with the other dog too long. hunting a dog alone does not make one independant. independance is a bred in trait. hunting one alone makes it a coondog that needs no help to tree a coon.

dont be afraid to "help them" this time of year is tough...i started my current dog last Feb but we have pretty thick coon...

i spent LOTS of nites walking through the woods with him...took him to places i knew should have a coon track..creek bottoms and den trees any warm nite we had...

was a few trees i found coon up and "helped him"..season was still in so i'd knock them out for him..wasnt long and he didnt need my help...he knew what a coon was..i worked him on a caged coon..let him tree and and shot it down to him...he would open on a coon track and treed his first his own by dumb luck..i was just walking him at nite a few nites after the caged coon work out...a coon fight broke out...he took off toward it and opened on track and started treeing a little...completely unsure about treeing...i had to tie him to the tree and RUN to the truck for the gun...

after that he'd open on a track fine...i just had to help him tree most of his first few...


i usually have to run a couple feeder if i am starting a dog this time of year though...somewhere i can ensure hot tracks for the youngun..my current dog i didnt have to..

but i spent A LOT of time walking in the woods with him...got frustrating that he wouldnt range by himself....now, he is around a year and a half and when i go on bad nites or pressured land, i cry when i hear him open and can BARELY hear him...kinda miss the close hunting LoL..i'd walk quad trails and creek bottoms and field edges...he'd range farther and farther but took a while before he'd go real far...part of that might be because a lot of times here a dog dont gotta go very far to strike a track if you turn em out in the right spot..

id agree with toe cutter...pup trainers have their ups and downs....my buddy started his pup, from the same litter as mine a few months earlier with their mother..


he started much faster...and ranged farther much faster....but he stood on his head longer IMO....especially when it came to longer tracks, tougher tracks, trickier tracks, older tracks etc...my dog already learned to track a coon by itself...by the time they were both 1 they were on the same page but took my buddies longer to get there i think...

he also didnt know what to do once that other dog got gone quick..he'd come back...i fixed that...i had them both out alone one nite and was kinda sick of trying to train my buddies dog when i knew id have to train my own...he came back to the truck and i threw his butt in..his mom went and pounded a tree...boy he got MAD....he flipped the switch on that nite...


now, we are reversing roles...my dog is slower in the hunts because he hasnt been hunted with other dogs...i started running both brothers together a bit...my dog just gotta learn to keep doin what he does when he is alone and dont worry about the other dogs and not to be afraid to tree with those other dogs...didnt take long..but was a hurdle to cross and did take a couple nites...
