Has anyone gave a pregnant female the hormone shot to get rid of the pups. There is a series of shots. If so, what happend when you started hunting the dog again?

The hormone was called Lutalyse. It was an accidental breeding. Vet caught the pregnancy, suggested giving the injections. 6 total injections which given 5 weeks ago. Curious if anyone has done this and what they have seen in the way the dog acts in the woods.

hormone shot

i had a 14 month old gyp that was accidently bred while hunting one nite, i took her to the vet the next day and got the hormone shot. it didnt effect her hunting ability but she never had a regular heat cycle after that, therefore she couldnt be bred. not sure if the shot was the cause but personally i wouldnt do it again. just my opinion.

Well I was going to say NO!!!!DONT DO IT!!!!! but since you already have Im going to try and educate some others as to why this was not very smart!
First things first. If you own a female dog there are certain measures that you must take to prevent said accident! A good ol fashion heat box must be built! Nothing beats sawmill lumber for this. Some boards screwed together in such a fashion that they form the shape of a 5wideX10longX6'tall heat box does wonders to prevent accidents.
Second. Pay attention to your gyp! If your hunting her and she "sqatting" allot, but not peeing. Thats a tell, tell sign that she might be starting to come in. That or she has an infection. Look at her daily. A gyp will not take a male in the first few days. This allows you time to see her swollen, or dripping blood. Once that happens see step 1.
Lastly. Educate yourself before you do something, well for lack of a better word dumb! There is no such thing as an accidental breeding if you follow step one and step two. However, if you do make a mistake and skip a step, and somehow find fido nut deep in your prize gyp. Remember this, Its not the dogs fault!
I hope nothing but the best for your gyp, BUT what I have personally seen is that the odds will now be stacked against her. She will come in at uneven periods, even if she takes a dog she normally will not carry pups, and will abort them! I mean after all hormones are what triggers all of this, correct? Now biologically her reproductive system is scrambled to say the least.
My personal suggestion would have been hunt the piss out of her right up until she had the pups. Once the pups arrived, they disappeared on the same day! Dry her up and get back to hunting the piss out of her!
Again, I wish you nothing but the best for her and Im sure you'll get some guys on here to say she'll be just fine, but in 22+yrs of following dogs Ive never witnessed a good out come from giving a gyp hormones to force an abortion.
All this and I didnt even waste my time going into what it can do to them when they get older.

Very well said! Basically, if you mess with mother nature, she gonna turn round and bite you in the butt.

So true. It would take a grizzly bear to get mine during that time for sure.

I dont need to be called 'dumb" or a lecture on educating myself to read the signs of my dog. READ THE QUESTION. I asked, "curious if anyone has done this and what they have see in the way the dog acts in the woods". Your obviously the worlds greatest coonhunter and no doubt, the true dog wisperer. To the guys who answered my QUESTION, THANK YOU.

First off friend I NEVER called "you" DUMB. I do not call people names nor emerse myself in childish like games! I said, "before you do something that is for lack of a better word DUMB".
Now lets address the true situation here. You made a post asking for feedback. You were hoping to get positive feedback that everything is going to be just fine(and i hope that this is the case and that no damage has been done to your gyp). However this is not the feedback that you recieved. It was negitive and not what you wanted to hear, so your lashing out?
I was never trying to educate you. I was trying to educate OTHERS whom might be reading your post. You are already educated, experiance is nothing more than learning from ones mistakes.
As far as me being the greatest or the dog whisperer? Man I wish that where true, but alast its not. Its just experiance(see above statement to learn where experiance comes from).
Mr. Johnson. I will agree 100% that accidents are called accidents for a reason, and that reason is. Its hard for man to admit when they have made a mistake, or not paid attention. Its easy for man to simply say it was an accident.
Finally Black And Tan Man. I am truly sorry if you honestly thought that I was calling you names, and/or if for one second you felt like I was questioning your hound savy. As I was not. I was truly trying to make a reply giving examples and reason as to why this is not a good idea.
I honestly felt that I had addressed your question properly, and for that sir your welcome.

some accidents are just that... some gyps dont show they are in heat.... i had one never bled or swelled or changed the way she acted until she was bred accidently one night while hunting... after that she came in season just like any other female.... btw her pups are the same way
