Biggest Coon taken this year

I have taken some real nice coon this year in the 18 to 22 pound range but we got our biggest tonite. Took my good friend Henry and his pup along. Bluspeck struck an old cold feeder track along a creek and grubbed it along aways and finally warmed it up. Coon tapped on two seperate trees before Blu settled on a big maple. The coon tried his best to hide in the grapevine tangle in the top but ole deadeye Henry spotted him rite off. The first shot sent him climbing down, and tho I did my best to squall him all the way down for Henrys pup he decided to stay about 20 feet up. Head shot tumbled him out but off he went. We gave him a head start and turned Henry's pup loose she opened nice on the track. We cut Blu in for support and they treed in another large maple about 100 yrds away. Course I reach for the camera and I had left it home. Packed the ole boar out and took this picture when I got home. Bluspeck is a 75 lb hound and the coon tipped the scales at 24 1/2 lbs. My biggest coon ever was back in 1973 weighed just a bit over 29 lbs. I have killed several in the 23 to 25 lb range over the years. I would love to hunt Wisconsin, Maine or Canada where you can get one in the 30 to 40 lb. range!
Good fun, good company!

Holy Moly Doug, that is a monsta!! Biggest I have ever treed here in SE Ohio is 23 1/2 lbs. And that is over a period of more than 30 years and probably after assessing near 3000 coon. I have treed 22 this past week since our season has come in and the biggest to date this year is about 18 3/4 lbs.

If my coon get that big I'm gonna need a pit bull for a catch dog LOL!!

Martin Clemons told me he harvsted a coon weighing 24.5 pound up near the Michigan/Indiana line the other night.

I generally catch a couple near the 20 pound mark every year but the biggest I have caught is 22.5. I have harvested thousands of coon over the last 50 years.

Thanks

Good to hear honest opinions on coon weights. I have been weighing my coon since 1971. When someone gets on here and says they harvested a 45 lb coon in NY I chuckle!!I usually like to skin in woods but if its a nice one I like to bring home and weigh on the scales. Dave glad to see you do both comp. and pleasure. Seems like all the posts on those high powered competition dogs dissapears once season opens. Everything that gets shot gets skinned and sold. I will leave coon in the tree if more than one. I suppose farther south where hides arent worth as much or coon populations are small killing is limited. We have a fairly good coon population and with a lot of places to hunt I dont hunt any one area too hard and the ones I shoot I feel helps keep the population healthy. Got 25 in freezer now waiting to see what the market brings. Dave I saw your sweet Holly tree on the video very nice!

I killed one the second night of our kill season that started at a good 20 pounds at the tree and felt like about 50 pounds by the time I got to the truck. I think thats where most people get their coon weights is how it feels by the time they get to the truck.

Real nice coon Doug. We got a 24 with a bob tail last week, biggest this year so far. Noticed that even the average ones are carrying alot of fat this year.

I would think twice about rolling a live 10lb coon out to a pup let alone a big one like that.
I always thought my coons averaged about 10-12lbs until I weighed a really big one last year. It came in at a whopping 14lbs. I guess those I thought were 10-12lbs were really only about 6-8 lbs.

Doug back in the late 70's I killed one that tipped the scales at 37 lbs. The best I've done since is 31 lbs. Most coon around here run between 15 and 18 lbs. By the way those were great pictures..

http://s1340.photobucket.com/albums/o738/vittonej/
I posted these coon from opening weekend from WI on the Big Coon Thread earlier the two big coon are 39 pounds. I have to use a coyote stetcher. to put them up. With over 25 years of hunting have killed a 40 pounder these two were so close 3 oz. away from 40.

I,am thinking about the old joke about the guy showing his dog a coon stretcher be for he went hunting and thats the size coon his dog would tree. The dog saw his wife,s ironing board one evening and they haven,t seen hide nor hair of him since. I think you better get you a couple ironing boards.LOL Nice coon, nice pictures.
