Question

I have a 3 1/2 month old walker pup that will track and tree a drag and he's doing better then my year old redbone, I'm thinking about taking him hunting tomorrow night for the first time. He has 4 world champions in his 5 gen. Cain bein his grandpa, any thoughts???

I wouldn't put the hunting on a young dog until he is around 9 months. I don't even fool with them until around 7 let them be pups

It wont hurt to take your pup alone, perfet age for a walk in the woods. I have a huntin buddy who has a cain pup that has been treeing coon alone since he was 4 monthe old. But just take the pup.

That's what I was thinking, he shows a lot of will, after I worked with him of the drag he's kept his nose on the ground all the time

I would just watch what you drop him with a lot of times dropping them with a hard going dog when they are too young to keep up will get them excited and playful and barking, it becomes a habit.

Pup training. JMO

I don't care how well your pup is breed, or how well its doing on a drag. One bad experience ( electric fence, coyote, etc... ) can absolutely ruin it. A 3 1/2 month old pup is like a little kid, there not mature enough. I'm not saying don't train, and have fun with your pup. Just do it in a more controlled environment ( drags, turn loose coon ). Good luck with your pup. JMO

Its your pup and I cant tell you what to do with him but this is how I feel on this subject. 3 1/2 month old puppy has no buisness in the woods at night WITH a broke running hound. If you want to walk him in the woods by himself during the day or night that would be fine.

3 1/2 month old pups I just let them be pups run around play I do not attempt to make them tree or work. I may work on leading and basic commands if they seem to be calm enough. Maybe its just me but starting a pup that young is asking for trouble. Their lack of attention, new sights, smells, terrain, night time, coon lights, strange dogs just things the pup isnt used too can ruin him quick.

Dont get caught up in this "My dog was running and treeing at 5 months old" crap get in your head. Pups that start that early are one in a million and never seem to finish like they start. Personally I think they get bored with it but thats just my 2 cents

Way more dogs are ruined because they dont get to the woods than are ruined because they were. The reason more well bred pups dont start early is because they dont get the chance. One thing forsure a dog never learned anything in the pen. Im not saying you should turn a half grown pup out with a broke hound but just giving a pup woods time alone gives them a big headstart over one that sits until it is older.

Haha yeah I would only take him out by himself, let him get used to everything young, lights terrain and stuff like that.
