Why is that us die hard blue dog hunters love the breed so much?

I've never ever owned, raised, breed, trained, or hunted anything but blueticks. For one it was the breed my dad admired and he had a old smokey river female when I was a lil boy the first kind of coon dog I ever knew was old Cindy. She was out of Diamond Jim. She was the killingest dog I've ever seen to this day. There was no playing around at all I don't care how big a boar coon it was she would make two or three circles around a fully live coon and at the right time when she knew it was right she would dive in go for the back of the neck a few cracks and pops of the neck bone and it was over.

Here's a story my dad tells me about Cindy before I was born. Some fella had heard about ole Cindy and how she would whoop any size coon by herself through the grape vine. Well the fella trapped live coons until he caught a monster ole boar. He found my dad and said "Scott
I got a coon that I bet that dog of yours can't kill". Dad said "Lay your money down because I know she can".

So dad went and got Cindy and drove to the guys house. The feller let the coon out of the cage. Dad let Cindy go and the normal happened. She made two circles around the coon and boom striaght for the back of the neck a pop or two of the bones and it was over. Dad said the guy jusy shook his head.

But Cindy was a mean dog really. She was a dog that could be hunted but not breed to to pass on her traits. She got knocked up by a stray male dog one time and she killed everyone of the pups and dad was the only one who she would come to.

But anyway as far as a hunting dog Cindy was one bad bitch. That being said Cindy is the dog that influenced me to blueticks I guess cause she was my dad's dog and he liked blueticks so it was just natural for blueticks to be in my blood. I've never hunted anything but blueticks I always wanted to try a redtick but always had my own dogs and didn't have any room at the house for a different breed because if I made room for another dog it was going to be a pup from a litter I was having or going to have out of our own dogs.

I was ruined with walkers I guess when I was little even tho there a great breed of hounds and when you got the right blood their pretty dang good at what they do but I was introduced to some the most slick treeing things you ever seen. Walk clean to the top a mount to shine your light up a maple sapling.

When Cindy died of cancer it hurt me and dad to the core because she was the first real good hound dad ever had and she was a family member when she wasn't being hunted. Dad got out of coon hunting for several years I may have been nine or ten when she passed. A few years went by and dad said I'm going to get me another female bluetick pup.

So dad looked around and made some phone calls and I have no idea how he found Gene Bragg in the hills of west Virginia but some how he found out he had a litter of pups on the ground that were Bragg and Ucthman breed. Dad wasn't big into blood lines really. He always thought smokey river were the best. So him and mom got in the truck and drove to Gene's house and dad said there was blueticks every where pups young dogs and old dogs. Some hunting dogs and others just breeding dogs. Gene hunted bears and coons I believe.

Gene said there's the pups Scott. They were running around loose and playing and what not getting into everything. Dad drove several hours to get to gene's house and wanted to take his time in picking out a female pup that looked like had the best chance of making a coon dog. All of a sudden a house cat took off across the yard and one of the pups out of the all of them took of after it and ran it up a fence post and started barking at it. Dad said I hope that's a female. And it was and he said I'll take that one Gene.

Well dad named her Dolly. Duncan's Blue Screaming Dolly on the papers. Dolly was laid back as they come. She was not a fastest coon dog nor the best but she was a coon dog. A meat dog. When she treed you could flick your gun on fire cause she had a coon. Dolly was the straightest coon dog I had ever seen or hunted. We didn't start her with a cage coon she never even had seen a cage coon. She was about 8 months old the first time dad put her in the woods with out really any training of any kind. Dad didn't even really care if she made a coon dog he said he just wanted a ole bluetick to lay around the yard and be his friend. Well she was that but you can't stop instincts. That first night out we road along a river spotting the trees for a coon to do like a simulated hunt. Since it was her first time dad wanted to make sure there was a coon around to hopefully grab her nose's attention.

Well we spotted a coon and we stopped and dad let her off the truck and she didn't do much at first. Just peed and pooped and kinda looked around and sniffed and then she started nosing around. She picked her head up and started winding. She crossed the river and **** if she didn't make her way to the tree and she stood up on it smelling. But not once had she barked of any kinda yet. Dad said boy season ain't in but that pup just treed that coon and I'm going to knock it out just because I want her to know thats what I want her to hunt. And weather you believe this or not we chopped the tree down with a hand hatchet! We didn't take a gun because season was out and didn't really even plan on treeing a coon to begin with. Dad get tired of chopping and he'd hand it to me and I'd start chopping. The whole time dolly was standing there at the tree sniffing and she started to whine and whimper. Like she wanted to tree. Dad was talking her up trying to get her to tree but she never did just whined. The tree was about 12 inches diameter so I'd say we chopped for 45 minutes or so. Finally the tree started popping and it fell in the river. Haha we was yelling get em dolly get em!!! She jumped in the river it was late summer so it was low and warm. She found the coon and started baying it. I was so excited I didn't know what to do with myself.

Anyway from that night on I had coon dog fever. I was 12 I believe to young to drive but my cousin that has Cerebral palsy loved going hound hunting just get to listen to the dogs but he couldnt walk so he was my ticket to coon hunting almost every night.

We breed Dolly to Rocklynn Phillip's full blooded Cameron male and that brings us to present day. That cross gave me a female named Belle that most of y'all are fimilar with. Belle is the best coon dog ive ever hunted or been hunting with. I wish I knew how many hours we've spent together at night. She's still alive and kicking and still treeing coons but I've retired her. I don't hardly hunt her anymore she runs loose around the house and sleeps 90 % of the day away lol.

Now I got a female out of her that is a fire cracker. Born natural with looks to boot. She coming on very well and she's a spitting image of her momma of her hunting style. But I guess that's why I feel in love with the breed. There's good and bad in all breeds but I guess ive been very thankful to have always been around good dogs that show me a coon night in and night out of hunting.

My grandpa bought a bluetick female for my brother when we were younger named Gypsey and Ive liked the blueticks ever since.I bought my first bluetick pup with bean hoeing money when I was 15 without my mom and dad knowing.There was an old man in town that was a bit of a local legend that Id been hunting with that had 2 or 3 litters.He said I could have my choice of them all for $50.I picked out a male pup that was built like a brick S&(#house.I called him Ringo and he was a sharp looking dog.Being 15 I didnt know what I was doing so I hunted that pup with any guys dog that would give me a ride to the woods.Well that caused him to run deer and coyote and I had no way of breaking him without a shock collar.I learned to hunt him by himself more and he would tree a coon in style.Big booming bawl mouth and treed on the wood.I own this dogs daughter,grandson and great grandson now. I made his daughter a nite champ.When she opens on track i can still hear old Ringo in her voice.

started hunting with my uncle, i was five, i loved his dog satan, and others such as smoke, molly,shorty, dixie and may.
all of these dogs were coondogs that treed real live coon, not trees
my luck wasnt so good , had four dogs but none that turned out.
my uncle sold a real little gyp to an older gentleman,man could she burn a track and tree with the best of them her name was missy
the old fella called me on the phone and said he had something for me about 2months later.
much to my surprize he handed me the papers to missy and a 410 shotgun and said she was too much dog for an old man!
i dont know whos smile was the biggest , mine or his.
owned the dog for about3hrs. we went hunting and just like always she run and treedabout 450 yrds. i never saw her again ,
someone stold her off the tree!! three hour of joy then disgust.
long story short, the blood i have now is what was behind missy
her memory ill never forget!!

My first dog was a bluetick I trained him , not knowing what i was doing with no internet to get advise from I loved everything about that dog he got stolen from my house while I was in the hospital. I've had almost everybreed since and havent had a dog like jake since.I just bought a couple blueticks and the male I have now is fun to hunt with. I pretty much know if I cut him loose by himself Im getting him off a tree and hes real good about having a coon but with other dogs he doesnt mind to back a slick tree. I just love walking out my back door seeing a couple blue dogs outside. I dont want to go back and try any of the other breeds again,I know there is a lot of good dogs in all breeds I just havent had one. ive had two nice blueticks though, get gone, get treed, see eyes what more could I ask for.

Back in 1956 my Dad bought two pups from Warren Haslouer at the Smokey River Kennels. I was 5 years old when these pups arrived, by train, to Temple Texas. Right then, I fell in love with Bluetick Coonhounds. A couple of years later Dad got a female from E. K. Malcum at Sandy Creek Kennels in GA. She carried the old blood of Eddy Ross' Mt. Music Blaze. From those days until today, there has always been Nolan Creek Blueticks. I have never followed anything but BLUE.
So I guess you can say I have 'blue' in my blood.

Versatility. I feel that the Bluetick breed can excell on a wider variety of game than any other breed of hounds if bred properly. I understand the desire to breed the competition hound as everyone likes to win. I fear that when we breed the type of hound that can win the big hunts, we are loosing some of the qualities that have made this breed so great.
