I admit it I cant cull my dog

raised him since he was a pup and hes 16 months old now and trashy and all get out. Hes the first dog I ever owned and I know he needs to be culled but I cant do it. If he wouldnt spend all night cryin on a track and stayed hooked I would guive him away. I dont know what to do I tell myself if he cant be huntin then hed rather not be alive. But I wish somebody would use him as a yard dog or somethin but nobody can get him caught besides me. I just hate it

Have him neutered. He's then culled and you can use him for what or ever you want. Culling doesn't mean killing..............it means removing from the gene pool
.
I've culled several hounds and enjoyed the heck out them for the rest of their natural lives.

young dog

Everything i'd want mine doing at 16 months old! All you need to do is break him off the trash. Kill some coons over him. Tie him back on a few trees.. he is still learning!

break him.a hounds natural instinct is to run and tree game you just have to teach him what not to run.a dog can only be as good as his handler.most of them are not born broke

He seems gammy enough to try this and it does work. Trap you a coon get you a bucket cut a hole in the bottom of the bucket just big enough the dog can stick his nose in there good but not see the coon put the bucket infront on the door on the trap open the door let the coon go into the bucket put the lid on the bucket pull the bucket up a tree just high enough he can stick his nose in there when he does that coon is gonna give him an attitude check and his hate for coons is gonna come on if he goes ape **** crazy pull it up higher praise him while he trees then let the coon out of the bucket for him to really get that aggression to build. Then do a few drags but always take him off the coon wanting the coon

I accualy LIKE working with the hard cases, assuming they show extra tallent of some type (esp tallent often missing in most others)

Fact: Wld NT CH Heat ran more trash than any dog i ever saw (up to at least the age of 6)......he accualy caught a spring fawn one night (true story)

in fact some of the best i ever saw accualy looked like crap if they were not hunted like they were stolen ( like 350+ nights a year/dark till dawn) .......and ive seen lots that looked good if left in the kennel and only taken out once a week or less (like when there was a night hunt close) but fell apart if hunted several nights strait.

lots of times, a hounds prob isnt lack of tallent on there part.....its lack of intelligance on there trainers part.....you have to tear a dog apart and find out what makes it tick.....then keep that gear greased.

I have left hundreds in the woods because they had a major flaw in there natural ability.........but ive also fixed a bunch others failed to reconise.......

sad fact is coffie shop coonhunters require coffie shop hounds.........something that can go from nothing to capible of winning casts in 30 nights of hunting.....and if they cant keep that pace........there culled

todays hunts are held where the dogs that win are accualy squirrel dogs in coondog clothing :/

bottem line is, if he has a major flaw (and it sounds like you may be aware of some) and a solid effort to fix it has failed.......you are prob spot on about it being time for lead poisoning.

Fellas - I have doubts that this is a real hunter posting their problems. If it is I apologize. More likely this is an animal rights group hoping to get material for their war against hunters by having people post remarks that include shooting a dog. Post wisely please!

Right? There isn't even a clear question to this post...it definitely seems like a statement just fishing for a bunch of people to say "shoot the dog"--and I like how no one said that! Everyone just talks about putting in more effort to the pup's training and to give the pup a fair shake. If this post was a setup to make all hunters out to be inhumane, it backfired this round.

Not to mention the original poster never returned to his/her thread...that is always suspicious.

What's up with the Human Society anyway? In regards to "culling" (although as Ziegler stated, that can be as simple as spay/neuter too), the HSUS and the ASPCA euthanize more animals every day than they adopt out. So, what leg are they standing on? There are plenty of cases in our world, exhibiting severe animal abuse and neglect, for these concerned people to focus their efforts on...instead they're crying about coonhounds, just like they cry about our sled dogs back home. Its irritating and misguided.
