Laser Pointers?

Are you allowed to use laser pointers when shinning a tree?

Yes you can. It is considered a light. I think this was covered in the advisor.

People use them to show others where the coon is. UKC hunt one night one handler keep saying there's the coon no one else could see it finally one of the other handlers handed them a laser and said show us where it is.. The handler that keep saying there it is just turned around and walked away and said "think we should circle it". You can use them to show where coon is or you can have soneone else show you where the coon is or ain't LOL!

Yes, i was asking because I was thinkng to use it to show where the coon is, not to aid in helping to shine the tree.

Interesting topic.

Just this past weekend at a local hunt in my 3 dog cast, I pulled out my laser pointer to show a coon who was sitting on a bare limb. One of the cast members was apparently having seeing problems suddenly!

As soon as the judge saw the light(who coincidentally was also the one with the seeing problem and is also a master of hounds at a nearby club) said you're scratched! Now, I'll be the first to tell you that I was confused! I questioned it and he explained that you may not use a laser pointer on a UKC cast and it's a scratchable offense. LOL!

Of course if you question an offense that can result in a scratch you have to go back to the clubhouse. When he was kindly reminded of that and realized the deadline would get us before we could return, he decided it wasn't that big of a deal after all.

The moral of the story: Laser pointers are considered a light under UKC rule interpretation and are perfectly legal. 2nd moral to the story- know the rules up and down and don't be afraid to stand on them.

I was also told last week buy a judge when i pulled mine out that it was a scratchable offense. But i stated to him to check the rules.. He is one of those that has trouble seeing them when he is down in a cast u may be lucky if he even shines from what i hear lol

Got it at Staples or I think Office Depot has them too. I use it at school teaching too. One end is ink pen/projector pen and the other end is the laser pointer. It is made of some pretty solid stuff and batteries last about a year.
